A "Trunked Radio System" (T.R.S.) is a network of groups of three or more VHF Repeaters spread countrywide, usually installed on a Sentech Tower. These are all inter-connected by landline or microwave links via the Telkom network. Each radio has an unique ID number as well as a Fleet number, i.e. a large Company would have, say, 100 radios with each one being given a unique number. The Control (Base Station) would call you, Dawie, at, say, radio #30, and only Dawie's radio would respond to that call, the other radios will remain muted.

Now you can be anywhere as indicated in the Map here, let's say Polokwane, while your Head Office might be in Durban, Cape Town or wherever. The Computerised Network would recognise the Fleet number being called as being your company's, while the ID number is yours alone. Once your radio receives such a "Call", it generates a ringing tone in the Caller's radio to indicate your radio has received the signal and alerts you to the call by 'ringing' and at the same time alerting you to the person's identity making the call via the alpha-numeric LCD display. If you are not in your vehicle at time of being called, the originator receives a "No Answer" signal and the LCD display in your radio stores and displays the caller's name (or radio/fleet ID number), enabling you to return the call upon your return to the vehicle.

A Trunked Radio Network is the radio version of a Cellphone Network and the two are in direct competition to one another. One can set up a T.R.S. to make and receive telephone calls as well. The system can also be setup to transmit a variety of pre-stored SMS's if required.

There are other features which can be activated but the above is the normal way of operating a R.T.S. Although VHF, it operates in a completely different range of frequencies and a standard VHF radio cannot be used for this, it requires a purposely-designed radio.

The Network is always expanding. Currently, the dark orange on the map depicts the operating range as of date hereon while the lighter orange depicts planned future coverage.
