Tata Anyone?

Now, I know that Tata has a really bad reputation. But I have to admit, my Tata Xenon is one of the best cars that I have driven in a long time.

Does anyone else have a Tata that they love? If you do, tell me why!

Hi Alison, and welcome here!

Yes, it's true that they have a poor rep but then every now and then one hears good reports as well. My brother who owns a service station was asked by one of his clients to sell an older diesel Tata bakkie ... long story short, there were no takers but he had used it a few times as per the customer's permission and since the price was very low decided to buy it himself for use on the farm. He has in his own words been pleasantly surprised, particularly by it's power and economy.

We're all die-hard Hilux / Toyota fans here, so you can expect a little needling. :D: ;-) Enjoy your Xenon.

When I was in India we only drove in Tata’s and Mahindra’s, so I could give you a lot of reasons why I’ll never buy one. The only good thing about them is that you can overload them and strip the engine in the sand.

The Xenon's actually got a good reputation. Remember, you have to manufacture something to test and do fault finding to improve quality!

As far as I know, the first Tata's came out with a Peugeot engine. But I could be mistaken. . . Don't know if it is better or worst. . .

You know what, I drove a Tata Telcoline plaasbakkie on oom Willem's farm in Koes, and to tell the truth, I never expected it to last, BUT I was pleasantly surprised. It just kept on going, with no problems. It's STILL running now.

Granted, it's no luxury vehicle, and not an overlander or a serious "klou en grou" 4x4, but as a plaasbakkie? Cheap as chips and it keeps going and going... oom Willem is happy with his Tata...

He has a 1985 Hilux too, sigle cab, with no more headlights, no windscreen and very bald tyres, and he lets the farm workers drive that, because he knows they cant break it..... (well not any more than what it is)...

Welcome and enjoy your Tata Alison!!!

Hey Guys and Val!

Don't youse be talking bad about Tata!! :boss:

Like Thys says, cheap as chips and reliable. That's all I needed then, and my Tata gave the best that I could afford at that time!!

Wellcome at the Hilux forum, and do ignore these "nay" say'ers.

Post a few pics of your Tata!

PS, The Telcoline did come with a Peugeot engine and gearbox.
Do you know who built the first Diesel engine for a production vehicle in the world???

PEUGEOT!

Welcome to the forum.

A friend bought a Tata, you geussed it, to use as a plaas bakkie. Couple of years later with LOTS of hard kilos on it he had only good things to say about it. The Tata was then stolen .... he bought another one. Few weeks later the bakkie was recovered and he bought it back from the insurance.

These two bakkies combined has given him LESS hassles than his wifes TOYOTA !!! OUCH !!

The ONLY reason Toyotas cost so much - we are willing to pay for the "extras". other than those extras there is nothing wrong with the Tata.

Thing is people want to pay half price for a Tata, then want to compare it to the top of the line Hilux ... hardly a fair comparison.

Give the Indians and Chinese some time, they learn fast. The Japanese only started long before them. They also bought those plans from from well known manufacturers and start building themselves. Perfection comes with time. First Japanese vehicles were also crab but much cheaper then the Americans.

Tata and Mahindra last if you do not race them everyday.

The above is incorrect, in 1924, the MAN truck received the first direct injection diesel engine!
