What diesel engine to use?
Hi all!
A friend of mine just bought a 98 SFA D/Cab 4x4 with a 2,2 Petrol engine(not the original) He wants to change it to a Diesel mainly for fuel consumption. He is not worried about power. He is thinking of a 2.8D or a KZ, but I know both of them has they're drawbacks. I told him to keep the 2.2 but I'm not sure what the fuel consumption is on them. So the question is, should he keep the 2.2 , if so, what can he expect to get on liter of fuel, If he should go for Diesel, witch will be the better engine?
Thanks.

Re: What diesel engine to use?

The 3CT is a 2,0 diesel turbo Toyota motor - imported here.
A friend has the 2.5DT Mazda in a 2x4 & gets around 7.5Km/l driving like Miss Daisy so they not that light on juice.

Don't think the Ford/Mazda will do the trick. Anyone has any idea of the consumption of the 3CT?

Jacques there are guys on the forum who get well over 10km/l with a 3CT.
You can scroll through die "Consumption of your Hilux" topic. I know there is one or two 3CT stat's in there.

Re: What diesel engine to use?
hello jacques, the way I understood it was the 2CT is a 2litre and there are plenty available from R3750 up. the 3CT is a 2.2 litre which we were interested in but could not find one anywhere and the price if available would be R14000. the good thing with these engines is no electronic issues and bell housings are interchangeable with 22R not sure about 4Y. have decided to stick with 22R

Guys, don't be so quick to believe other okes fuel consumption stats! The only accurate way to measure fuel consumption is by logging it for a couple of tanks!

Re: What diesel engine to use?
We have the 3Ct motor and if you drive it nicely at 100-110km/h, 10km/l on the open road. We couldn't live with the fuel consumption of the 2.2 petrol either, and decided to to the conversion. Once we actually managed to get 13km/l on our way back from Kgalagadi! Has not happened again though :)

very similar to standard 4yMr_B wrote:oom dan wrote:...anyone know what hp it develops

I had one in mine - fantastic fuel consumption! I did 30 000km on mine before I stripped my truck for a rebuild.
11-14 km/l best consumption I have EVER gotten on any vehicle EVER!
but as for spares????? terrible

Rick, now it makes sence!! Didn't realise it was you going the 7MGTE route!!
Good luck with that mate, I'm telling you now that will need a neckbrace for that whiplash-pull-away
What are going to do with youre trusty 3CT?
Did you really struggle with spares?
Every single bit or just some filters, injectors, ect?

Re: What diesel engine to use?
You can try Japan Auto (JHB) but I'm not too sure that you will get lucky. The "C" series diesels are old motors dating back to the 1960's and the 3c-t (turbo) were used up until the mid to late 1990's when they were phased out.
Other than that you can try scrap yards, but again, old motors and you'll need to very lucky to find one in reasonable nick. Then as mentioned, spares are going to be a problem.
If you're looking to fit it into your Landy, then you're obviously not a purist so why not rather go for the Ford 2.5 WL motor. These are pretty tough and reliable motors with good fuel economy and decent torque / power. There are very few Ford motors that I'd recommend but this is definitely one of them.
