Free flow snorkel

Post by pietdevs »

It is common knowledge of how poor the air inlet and exhaust design on the KZTE is. I changed my exhaust system to a free flow (Downey USA) and modified my snorkel inlet. I went straight through the mud guard into the engine compartment with a 90mm pipe and rotated the air filter to fit this inlet. I cut the 90mm bend off the snorkel to allow for the straight pipe. This eliminates the 90 deg bend on the snorkel (and the severe restriction) as well as the 180 deg bend back to the conventional air cleaner. The losses through the narrowed sections and the bends are all eliminated. In addition to the above I modified the inside of the air cleaner by removing 70% of the air flow directional “cap” and flattening the inlet pipe lip that flows into the air cleaner.
I am absolutely amazed at the result, especially above 2000 rpm. I have not had it on a dyno but the change in performance is mind boggling even at low revs. It is interesting to note that the inlet air flow required by the KZ is 275 – 350CFM @ 2000 - 3000 rpm. The pipe design size to accommodate this air flow would ideally be 100mm without any additional restrictions like bends. Just by looking at the standard snorkel pipe configuration it can clearly be seen how much the inlet restrictions are.
We compared a normal KZ to the modified one on the same hill on the same day – all I can say is unbelievable! (Regretfully the photos will not attach..)

That ram air effect through the filter really is impressive.

Pieter,

Is daar 'n verbetering in brandstof verbruik?

My oom het 'm 100 Series Cruiser, 4.5.

Watch this space!

Dit was baie nat vandag maar ek is 100% oortuig my trok trek nou baie beter!

Hallo HAnnes,

Ek het so 2 jaar gelede 'n dikker pp en freeflow silencer ingesit en dit het so klein verskilletjie gemaak. MAAR die trok trek ook beter.

Op 'n geheel sal ek se so rondom 0.2-0.5km/l beter.

More Hannes

Very interesting, I modified my exhaust; after fitting two side by side fuel tanks, I had little space for the exhaust, so I routed a 63mm pipe out the driver side and ran it under the step, it exits just before the rear wheel with one small freeflow box, the difference in power and acceleration was huge, and like Pieter said, the turbo starts spooling much sooner, now for that air cleaner mod, my grinder was begging for work!
I can't comment on fuel consumption, 'cause everytime I do a mod, i compensate by tweeking the pump a little.

Allan I'm very interested in fitting an extra fuel tank, did you fit another standard tank on the opposite side from the existing one?, and then just re route the exhaust pipe ?
I will be home in a weeks time , will need to come see what you did and do the same.

Yes, i used the same tank on the other side, it has a balance pipe in between, they fill and empty together.

The only problem is the exhaust routing

Ok then,

MAAR dis net my opinionated redenasie - always open for correction of weteskaplike bewyse!
