Garmin Nuvi 2460LT or 3790LT

Post by Mr_B »

Morning guys,

I'm very new to this whole GPS thing, got some questions for the clever chaps amongst us... I've been looking at 2 models, the Nuvi 2460LT and the more expensive 3790LT(by R1000). The 3790 is a really sleak sexy unit, but the 2460 has the larger screen(by 0.6")... but then again the 3790 has a much higher screen resolution(480 x 272px vs. 800 x 480px). The only other significant differences are... the 3790 has 3-D terrain view and 3-D buildings and landmarks view, again I have no idea what exactly the 3-D view is... and the 3790 has dual orientation view, so it can be used portrait or landscape format. Other than that the feature set is exactly the same. Bottom line, is the 3790 worth the R1000 price premium, or will the 2460 do everything I need?

Many dankies!

In short the 2460 is a super unit, that's the one I would go for

Bretton... bigger screen is worth more than higher resolution... and if you want to see the terrain in 3D just look out the windscreen...

I would also go for the 2460

Does the 2460 have the backtracking function or track log function?

All Nuvi's have track log function

But only the Zuma and Nuvi 500 have backtrack function (not sure if the 600 has, but would think it does?)

Backtrack will actually route you back the way you came, navigation style and bread crumbs will show you where you have been but not route, you will have to just follow he dots back. Not much of a diff but important for some :wink2:

i am speaking under severe correction, but on the 276c you can save your log and then it becomes a route that you can track it.I have never tested it.

I also thought 2460 would do, but now Cape Union Mart has dropped the price on the 3790, so the difference is only R600...

Now I'm thinking 3790! The 3D terrain feature with backtrack looks flipping cool!

Looks like this:

I bought the 2460 and a friend the 3790. The one big difference that I experienced is that the 2460's screen is more responsive when you touch it. On the 3790 I had to touch sometimes twice to get the GPS to respond.

that 3D view is perfect for SFA hilux's, you can see exactly when a hill is approaching and pre-emt your aproach speed.

Mr B you got a V6 now, no need to worry about the hills.

Hardy ha! Yes the V6 is a bit of an upgrade on Bolt's 2.2i... sad thing is, I get the same(if not better) fuel consumption from this beast! Of course this V6 makes you lazy... I tend to drive alot my like an old man these days!

Cape Union Mart has a price matching policy. I showed them the Outdoor Warehouse price and got the 2460 for R2500. The reason why I bought from them is because the guy that helped me knows his products. The Outdoor Warehouse people are clueless  . If you are really interested in the 3790 Makro is selling at R3000 I think at this stage

Thanks Louis, agreed, very few of the sales people are knowledgable on the Garmins... learnt that very quickly today, 2 salesmen admitted they are clueless with the Garmin products... really ridiculous!

If you are wanting "live traffic", bluetooth, big screen etc, I would go with the 2460. If you are looking for a dustproof, waterproof, backtrack, Due South is selling the now obsolete (or soon to be) Nuvi 500 for R2300 with 2011 SA Streetmaps. I went this route because I use it on muy bike too.
