VW is not competing with the Touareg this year.

That is why Giniel is going with his Hilux.

Word is that they've achieved what they wanted, and now want to enter the Amarok into the competition, instead of it being a recovery vehicle like last year...

It's taken them 4 years before wearing the crown 3 times in a row, with a dismal 6th place in it's 1st year.

Bet Giniel will make it 1st time 1st up!

in the Dakar a 6th place is not exactly "dismal".

I take off my hat to anybody that even dares to attempt it.

The real recovery vehicles of the Dakar has always been the MAN, Hino, Kamaz, Tatra and Iveco trucks used as sweeper vehicles. And we are not talking of the ones you see racing.

Ironically the Amarok's that has been supplied by VW to the Dakar only serve as media vehicles and official vehicles. It is like Merc supplying the pace car to F1. It is just a media stunt. They also drive long distances on dirt and tar road, and are not close to competition vehicles. BMW has for many years been using the X5 exactly the same function. So the Amarok can travel where an X5 can. Nothing mentioned of their entry with anything for 2012. My understanding is that all effort and money is going into WRC with the Polo for 2012. The couple of entrants showing Amarok vehicles for Dakar is private teams and not factory entrants. I stand to be corrected

Which vehicle is used and has been used already for a couple of years as the scouting/recce vehicles?? Toyota Hilux's. on the bike side it has been KTM's for a long time. So the vehicle in which the route is travelled at least 4 times by the organisers is a Hilux.
