KZ-TE RPM

Post by warrenaken »

I need someone to do a little test for me please.
You hear people saying you should not push a 1kzte engine past 2500rpm on the open road, so i was wondering at what speed are you guys travelling for this.
If i do 110km/h on the dash, that is a GPS speed of 106km/h, then i am below 2500rpm. If i go up to 109km/h (GPS) then i am touching 2500rpm.

31x10,5, canopy and draws, SAC intercooler and conversion.

On mine, 2500rpm is where the turbo starts to boost.
The person that you must talk to is Louis Fourie.
He has al the gadgets on and can tel you about the exhaust temp and revs.

I have more or less the same setup as you, i.e. 31X10X15, IC and Chip. The important thing to measure is not revs/speed, but EGT (Exhaust gas temperature). I am running cooler with my IC and chip than before. At 120km/h (115 GPS speed) I am running 50°C to 100°C cooler on my EGT at 120km/h with the IC and chip. Even when going uphill at 130km/h I am running just over 600°C.

The EGT must not run over 650°C but for short periods can go to 704°C - internet info when I had problems with my cylinder head.

It will be interesting to see what Dylan's (AM Racing) comments are - he knows a lot more than I do.

Hope this helps

EGT is very important to measure on any turbo diesel engine as that is a very accurate indication of how things are running under the hood!!!!

I was always told do not push the rev's past 3000 rpm but I agree what Louis said.

That makes sense.
I have read a few posts with mention of EGT sensors, but the prices seem a bit steep. Will do some more serches and reading.

Very interesting stuff :) I'm also with Neil and was told also to always try and keep it below 3000rpm.
Sometimes wonder if it is just me, but with the KZ I'm constantly worrying if something is going to "break", but have come to realise its just me not being familiar with a Diesel engine at all.
Unfortunately it does take something away from the driving pleasure and reading all the scary threads does stick in the back of my mind.

Warren/Richard

That is why I fitted an EGT guage - it puts the pleasure back into the driving :yahoo: . The best value for money that I could get was the Madman EGT guage at http://www.landyonline.co.za/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. The cost was ±R3400 sensors included (EGT, water, oil temp, oil pressure sensors). It then also measure your battery/charge voltage, hours that your engine is running and it can indate your CLD (Coolant level detection). It earth through the water in you cooling system, so when the coolant level is too low then - wallah - an alarm  .

And by knowing all this, I hope/believe that I have a pre-warning system in place.

Hi Richard,

My cruising speed is around 140 on the speedo, about 128 on the GPS. Revs is just under 3000 and I've been driving it like that for close to 300 000km and not a single problem at all!

Also has SAC intercooler and chip.

BUT high EGT's are a result of wide throttle openings at low RPM's, so under 2000RPM you have to shift to a lower gear.

My 17degrees worth!

Ek dink sterk aan n vvt-i lexus engin.... Mens is net so bietjie beperk met n diesel engin.

Thanks Thabo/JC

In general it just doesnt feel right (sukkel) when lower than 2000rpm so my natural feeling is to shift to a different gear anyways.

Hi Louis,

Volgens my dyno is my bakkie se peak power 2700/2800rpm.
My issue weer is as ek telank hier by die 3000 rpm gery het,
voel ek dit as ek weer brandstof in gooi - is nogsteeds better as die 2700 bakkies.
