So the fella that I met at the Heidelberg Air Show gave me a call on Thursday night and said we can go for a flight tonight. Got to Rand Airport and we took off around sunset in a Cessna 172.
First went over Vereeniging, swung around and went past Hillbrow, on to Sandton, Midrand, Centurion and back to Rand Airport. One hour and 15 minute flight - awesome!
Just before take-off
Airborne
The GPS (We actually hit 144knots at a stage)
Coming up on Vereeniging
The Heineken brewery
Coming up on the Joburg CBD
Hillbrow
The Wanderers club
Sandton, doll!
Centurion area (I think)
Those high lamps a bloody powerful
Pretty light patterns
Heading back South
Some more Sandton
More Hillbrow
JHB CBD (Pretty innit?)
Just before we landed

Flippin' difficult to get it right. Most of the time I was using 1/30 shutter speed, so a lot of pics were blurred... Even these are not that good, but it was a great experience!

Nice pics!
Can imagine the difficulty. F-stop of the lens? What F setting used? ISO setting?
That smog makes a beautiful red sunset!

I was using F1.8, 1/30 shutter, ISO 1600, Manual mode
I'm stunned I got as many pics as I did

Hi Andre
What is it like to fly in those Cessnas? I've alaways been sceptical even at just thinking about it. Pictures are awesome. Do you know more or less the altitude you flew?

I've always reckoned you haven't experienced flying until you've been in one of these. It's an awesome experience. Being so light compared to other commercial aircrafts, the tend to move around (pitch , yaw and tilt) much more.

Phew! That's maxing out the low light settings ..... pretty good pics though. At ISO 1600 I would have anticipated the pics to be more grainy. Nice.

Hey Donkey!
It really is an awesome experience in the small plane. A little bit bumpy, but I got used to it real quick. Most the time we were at around 6700ft above sea level (about 1200ft above ground here in Jhb

Yeah that's one area where Nikon really outperforms the competion... In the not so distant past, Canon was chasing megapixels while Nikon worked on image quality. Recently they are pretty much on par again

Amen!
Piloted something similar (tail dragger though) as well as a microlight before, great fun having to compensate for gusts , thermals etc. Even more fun is a stall turn
