Water tastes like plastic container

Post by Nick Bettys »

After fitting an 80 litre water container, the water still tastes like plastic after two trips. How do I get rid of this taste? Desperate :beg: . Please help. Leaving for Namibia in 4 days. Thanks

A tablespoon on unscented Jik per 10 / 15 litres of water, also helps. ;-)

give it a strong solution of jik and leave for a day or two. then rinse it out with clean water aa couple of times. I am not a fan of containers that you can not see trough to carry water. If water is left in them for long periods you tend to get algea buildup that is normally the brown type that does not need sunlight to flourish. If the water still takes like plastic then the quality of the plastic might be the issue.

Nick, jy kan ook Milton gebruik ipv Jik. Doen dieselfde ding, proe net nie so sterk soos Jik nie....

I also used milton tablets, also found it was the pipe and not the tank as much. replaced the "fish pond" pipe with that clear hose and was much better. not sure if this was just me/mine or if anyone else agrees? i know you meant to get different quality clear pipes for medical, etc and this apparently makes a difference, but dont know much about it (sorry)

Very interesting point Warren, and undoubtedly can be a contributing factor. Garden hose in particular, gives a plastic taste for years, particularly in the warer is allowed to stand in it for a while.

I used the clear pipe ... still have the plastic taste.

The only thing that has helped thus far is Milton.

But then, I have not tried the Vinalla essence yet ....

the 120 liter tank gets DRAINED and dried between the long trips. The 40 liter tank gets an EXTRA dose of milton between trips and then flushed a couple of times before the next short trip.

Do you use a garden hose to fill your tank? If not what do you use? The water will taste like plastic if you use a garden hose.

I'm confused here? When I got my Echo 3 with the Pioneer Platstics Echo 100 L water tank, I gave it 1 Jik treatment, and have had no strange tastes since! I fill it from my garden hose, and there is defenitely no strange or plastic taste.....

I would agree though with the Milton/Jik idea, as I had seen it lots on the Caravan forums.
