Has anybody had the oil light staying on longer than what one could regard as acceptable (say, 1-2 seconds) after start-up, on SFA, 3L, 2.8D's? This is a purely academic question, since I have recently completely replaced my vehicle's engine.
I bought it with 16,000 on the clock, and from the beginning noticed the light remaining on for much longer than what one would regard as normal, especially after the vehicle had been standing for a few days. I contacted Toyota about this, and communicated with another guy, who had similar experience at the time, but no explanation could be found. There were, however, rumours about some oil jets that spray the underside of the piston (all for cooling) coming loose. Needless to say, because I was the second owner and the guarantee had long expired, Toyota wiped themselves of this problem.
As I said, only to satisfy my curiosity... :)

1 TO 2 seconds after start up is no problem, you must remember that depending on what oil is in the engine this will also make a difference, what oil is in the engine?

Maybe I did not express myself very well. :?
There is no longer a problem here, because eventually, I replaced the engine with a new one. Oil light on this engine goes off almost immediately.
My problem was with the original engine, where the oil light used to stay on some 5 to 8 seconds after startup. After it had been "operated on" by various parties, the oil light would sometimes stay on for 15 to 20 s, especially if the vehicle had been standing for a few days. Under constant use, it never went off in less than 10 s after the engine had been opened up.
I used Castrol GTD and later Caltex Delo Gold. But IMHO changes of oil brand will have very little to do with oil pressure, except maybe between a monograde and a multigrade during hot and cold times (a gut feeling, I have no evidence of this). We used to run four 2.8D's at work, some of which were serviced by different workshops (using different multigrade oils), and the oil lights on all of these vehicles always went off immediately after start-up.
It then seems that judging by the number of replies I got to my post, this was indeed a rare problem...

Sounds like the oil pump was worn, assuming that the correct grade of oil was used and that the filter was not blocked. Or, as you stated, there was a major leakage somewhere spraying oil where it should not have, resulting in the pump battling to build up pressure.
