D4D 2005 - 2009 Front Brake Mod

Post by OOOOMS »

Earlier this year 'nitram' Martin and I went to get some spares. He got front brake pads for his Cruiser and me for my D4D.

Standard D4D Front Brake Pads - Standard
80 Cruiser Front Brake Pads - KD2208 (D3233)

We opened the boxes and compared notes (brake pads) and to my surprise the top 'line-up holes' matched :!: The only difference was that the Cruisers brake pad surface was larger about 15 - 20% except for a small minor differences.

So I bought a pair of front Cruiser pads for R205.00 and today tried fitting them.

Well I will be fitting mine in about 15 000km and with 15 - 20% more stopping power, it is sure to make a difference.

Also handy when perhaps stuck in a remote area

Hi Mark

More pad on the disc (larger) will give you more stopping power surely?

Confirmed, the 2009 / 2010 facelift has larger disc and calliper. The mod has been done but done through Toy is a costly route....

I don't see how. The contact pressure is equal to the Force applied (N) divided by the contact area. So if you make the pad larger the contact pressure will be lower. Either way - if you look at friction calculations - area never plays a role. IMHO the pads will last longer, and you may expect less fade.

Think about it this way - can you make the ABS activate with your current brake setup - if you can, then the friction isn't a problem any way.

If you make the contact area smaller (in this case the brake pad) you will have less stopping power, not so? So a larger pad should do the opposite and as you say last longer.

ABS would be great, yes

I believe this is an issue with the D4D with ABS. I have a client that has replaced the ABS pump (Toyota's recommendation), new discs and pads OEM. The pedal feels spongy. When compared to my non-ABS '05 there is a distinct difference in the braking action so to speak.
What I have found is that applying a light pressure to the pedal first (burning the brakes) does improve the the braking action significantly. But after a few km's it then goes back to the spongy feel. We adjusted the rear brake bias up which improved it slightly but I don't believe this to be the issue. Next stop, to play with different shoe and pad compounds/makes.

P.S. The Powerbrake stuff is awesome!!!   Fitted it on fast road cars, track cars, Landcruisers and Navara's. Not a single complaint yet from any client.
