My new ride!!!!

Post by ToyX4 »

I wish

pieter's hilux

Went to visit him last weekend and took these pic's for you guys.

Its an '89 SFA, with KZ-TE engine with intercooler.
He gave it a 100mm body lift and fitted 33" Geolander M/T's.
He did the engine himself, and the bullbar.

Much more I do not know.

I gave him the web address, but dunno if he joined yet.

Thys before you consider putting the scoop in first do the test I did. I removed the bonnet's bolts on the hinges, replaced them with longer ones and fitted about 15mm's worth of washers in there so that the air could come out there. As far as I am concerned it did not improve anything other it did not improve any under bonnet temperatures the only difference I detected was a hot windscreen

If you want to put it in for cosmetic purposes then go ahead.

Bennie... I have done that test and found that in fact the under bonnet temp does come down hugely. My previous Hilux had a Ford V6 conversion and I manufactured my own rear facing scoop and that made a huge difference. No more overheating. :D

I am loathe to cut into Kaspaas's bonnet, but I am considering all options.... The longer bolts trick I will remember for when we travel in Namibia in April...

O.k guys. This is what Pieter told me about the lift.

He had a solid bar machined, with a threaded rod through it. This bar is 100mm in length. This would be the spacer between body and chassis.
The only other mod he made was to the steering shaft. Extended it by 75mm. Also had a solid bar machined and pressed it over the shaft and then welded it.

He still has to move the rear bumper/towbar up a bit.

Does this help? He said if you have questions you can phone him. PM me to get his number.

Here is a pic to help.

Thanks for the info, Riaan!

It looks very solid, but I haven't seen any other pictures of spacers for bodylifts. Do the experts here think this is a good solution? Is the rod thick enough to handle the weight, etc, etc :?:

What he has done is what gets done generally, except that most guys still keep the original rubbers as shock absorbers to prevent shocks on the chassis to be propagated into the body.

If you are interested I can have a set made for you from aluminium (like the imported ones from Australia).

Thanks, Bennie! I just checked out the Snake Racing website and saw them. At what cost could you have them made up :?: I am definately interested in doing at least a 50mm lift. Is it necessary to extend brake lines, battery cables or anything else at 50mm? What about 75mm? I know you said in another thread that you do no need to extend the steering shaft at 50mm.

I also saw on the SR website that they recommend lifting the engine mounts. Is this necessary?
Anything else to consider? Thanks for the great advice

For anything more than 50mm you need to extend the steering arm. I can make spacers but do not want to mess with with the steering arm as anything made to fit there will have to by tested by the SABS otherwise it is playing with dangerous stuff (if it fails it can cause a serious accident). I checked out the break line mountings and it is on the chassis not the body so the rubber lines would not be affected but you will have to bend the metal pipes slightly open when lifting. It would not be a problem as they do have slag and extra bends in to cater for movement in the chassis.

I bought the 50mm Polyurethane set for R 650 and it does not look like I will need them any time soon so if you want them they are yours otherwise I will get the price on a aluminium set if you want longer ones.

Thanks, Bennie! Just a few more questions, before I decide. Is there any drawbacks or pro's to using polyurethane ISO aluminium? What tools do I need to install the kit? And how long should it take me to do?

The one is black and the one is grey

I have no idea I have seen guys use both and no one complained about either type. It might come down to what price you can get it for I guess.

Tools:
A few spanners and a jack (like a High Lift) to jack up the body or a couple of strong okes to lift the body

Off cuts of metal and a grinder, drill and maybe a welder if you want to make brackets to relocate your bumpers if needed

Time:

Saturday morning

Special tools needed:

A case of beers (or 2) to keep your mates happy while they are doing the work while you supervise & project manage the task at hand

I forgot 2 mention previously that if you lift higher then 50mm you may also need to install a longer left arm or get your gear lever extended as it might be difficult to reach.
