I received this email from a lady called Kate:
We are now taking winter bookings for travelers wanting to tour the 8 stunning mountain passes of the Eastern Cape Highlands – also known as ‘The Wild Side of the Drakensberg’. DriveOut/WegRy featured the area in their Oct/Nov edition and you may also be interested in a recent article that I have written about the passes which can be found on http://www.wildmountainadventures.co.za/page15.htm. All of the roads can be navigated on a self-drive basis, and we are happy to provide local weather and road information ahead of your travels.
You can contact her on:

Besides the Otto Du Plessis pass we did all the other 7 passes they offer on our last holiday out in the Eastern Cape/KZN plus a few others. This is a really spectacular part of the country and well worth the trip.

I suppose one does'nt really need their map (although there is a barely legible one on their site) .... these passes are all in the north eastern area of the Eastern Cape/ former Transkei and southern Lesoto ... they are quite easily 'googled' if anyone is interested. :)

True Andy, and they are well documented on T4A, which is what I used to plan our route through that area. Good thing my sister lives in Elliot, otherwise I probably never would have seen that part of the world. An interesting, scenic area with a lot of history and tradition, full of friendly people...

It's as you say Thys, steeped in history and very 'old worldly' ...... that whole area incl the eastern Free State is very scenic and well worth a visit.
