I received this email from a lady called Kate:
We are now taking winter bookings for travelers wanting to tour the
8 stunning mountain passes of the Eastern Cape Highlands – also known as ‘The Wild Side of the Drakensberg’. DriveOut/WegRy featured the area in their Oct/Nov edition and you may also be interested in a recent article that I have written about the passes which can be found on
http://www.wildmountainadventures.co.za/page15.htm. All of the roads can be navigated on a self-drive basis, and we are happy to provide local weather and road information ahead of your travels.
You can contact her on:

I suppose one does'nt really need their map (although there is a barely legible one on their site) .... these passes are all in the north eastern area of the Eastern Cape/ former Transkei and southern Lesoto ... they are quite easily 'googled' if anyone is interested. :)

It's as you say Thys, steeped in history and very 'old worldly' ...... that whole area incl the eastern Free State is very scenic and well worth a visit.
