Hi Guys, Christmas came early and my 93 hliux 2.2lt SFA was delivered today. Got 270 k clicks on the clock and the body work is in, what I think, good nick. Not being mechanically minded at all I was wondering if the experienced out there can give me some help. I am thinking of dropping a new 2.2 korean motor into this thing - anyone agree/disagree and why?
I would also like to know what things I should be checking/changing/replacing etc before I head into the hinterland??
Any help would be greatly appreciated - cant wait to get going
Cheers

Re: Recent proud owner
Welcome, you will find a lot of usefull info on this Forum.
I do not use the Chinese/Korean motors annymore because of reliabillity issues mainly caused by the use off poor quality materials. These motors usually outlast there guarantee (20 000 km), but don't expect much more.
For roughly the same amount you can rebuild your own motor using good quality parts, preferbly resleeve it back to STD.
Balancing, a Brospeed cam and a mild flow job is a good idea and shouldn't add more than 2.5K to the price, but a good 15KW extra.
There is a lot of info on EFI systems on the Forum, but that can be added later.

Re: Recent proud owner
James the Korean Motors have moved on considerably since the early day when Poor Quality Chinese Motors flooded RSA. These days they are doing 150,000kms plus in the mini bus taxis, go for it dude at R5.8K for a new 4YP you've got nothing to loose (just don't forget to retorque the head :!: :!: )
Otherwise Welcome Dude, enjoy your stay :!:
EFi is an awesome thing to do to a 4Y
BUT................
the best mod for your vehicle is.........
New Seats :!: :!:
Why...........cos:
The old ones are soft yet bulky so in the back it's bollie........
You could say "With SFA seats it's bollie in the bak......
Cos there isn't Mushroom"

James,
First drive it around locally for a while & determine if the original 4y is tired or not. Check for blue smoke under acceleration & also after running againsed compression. You might just get away with replacing valve stem seals. These motors tend to use a bit of oil so check the useage & take it from there.
Enjoy it.

Re: Recent proud owner
Hi James, and welcome. The 4y motor is not a high revving power plant, but has plenty low-end grunt due to it's longer stroke. It's so designed for better off-road ability and reliability. So at 270k on the clock, yours will undoubtedly be a little tired, but depending on how well it's been cared for, may not yet be desperate for overhauling. Drive it for a while and attend an outing with the guys in your area where you will be able to do a comparative assessment. Personally, I would prefer to re-build the old motor with genuine parts, but that's just me. Many of the guys are happy with their Korean transplants.
Enjoy the forum!

Re: Recent proud owner
Guys...thanks for such a warm welcome. This forum rocks!!!. Drove the growler to work today, got a slight tapping noise coming from what I think are the tappets. Other than that its almost as good as sex - gotta call the machine the "missus" - always lekka to play with on the side ! Apparently a good oil change should sort out the tappet knocking - is this true? or does one need to open up and fix?

A good flush/oil change should do it.

I'm not a qualified mech, just a backyard tinkerer... i managed to replace the hydraulic lifters myself, total cost was less than R 400.00 including parts and labour... I didn't charge myself labour... just bought some beer to say thank you!

What do i need to do?
Apparently the the 4YP from commercial have stretch bolts, and i remember something about that you cant use the same bolts twice... What do you think?
I am a bit worried and awaiting your answer eagerly.

Eeeish dude I was told that mine were stretch bolts and they're clearly not.
Suggest you borrow a torque wrench quick quick, whip off the carb and tighten them all up to 88NM in the specified order!
Do you have the order???
It's posted here somewhere, t'other wise I can take a peekcha from the manual if you need pal

Evert some of mine were only "finger tight", no way would a stretch bolt have got loose like that.Evert Deyzel wrote:But what if they are stretch bolts and there is nothing wrong with them?

Believe me you'll not do any harm cos if the Torque wrench clicks maximum then you know they are tight, if they're loose then you'll get them to 88NM... stretch bolts or not
It's a quick quick job pal, especially for the Carb boys
Ps.. the sequence is on here somewhere...

Thanks Rich - will change that on my profile - got the pic order mixed up too. Who would take a decent alu cab off like that. Design courtesy of Pietpoors, fabrication done by the local engineering works at a price that makes alucab and the lads look silly (R 7,5k !!)

Hey Tony,
I've heard those mountains are scary. I ripped the mbongolo a new ringpiece off Robert Broom a while back. I know what she can and cant (very little) do, so now its overlanding time. Added the jerry holders, 60lt water tank and hi lift jack on the weekend. Will need to update the pics. Funny thing is the more you add to the cab - the slower she becomes....time to look at the EFI or something

Thanks again Piet

James,
Thank you, I also followed the particular thread - did you consolidate all the available ideas & concepts into a single design/spec yourself or did Piet provide you and/or the engineers with the "ideal" concept?
I PM'd you
