2.7i in a SFA Hilux
Will members from this forum that have got experience with the 2.7i engine in the SFA Hilux please give some info on this thread. I would like to know of what costs are involved, what modifications are needed.
Don’t know why but this idea is haunting me!
Could always sell my 5L and exchange it for the 2.7!

Kom nou Leon, jy weet jy wil dit graag doen. Dink net hoe sal daai wa van jou dan sleep.
Jy sal die coolste Hilux in Moreletta park hê.
Al die chicks sal jou dig as jy so 'n wa ry.
Al jou vriende sal jou beny.

Leon,
He is just being nasty, 'cos he knows that the 2.7i "Kicks @ss!".
This would make a very lekker and highly respectable vehicle, without all the problems that the bigger engines produce.
Now, if I could only win the Lotto.... wait, I have, according to that email I again received just last week -

I was not nasty, I tried to provide some peer pressure to convince him to go for it.

Buy a 2.7i Hilux, and let Burnco in CPT convert it to SFA.......
Remember, the 98-95 model came out with SFA in Botswana (If I recall).

Hi there! Joined the forum today and browsed through when I saw this discussion. I'm not well versed in the mechanical jargon so have to ask! What is a 5L and SFA? I presume it refers to specific models of hilux?
I for instance drive a 2.7i 2001 mod. Is this a SFA?
cheers

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay. SFA = Solid Front Axel. So your 2.7 in it's original body will be a IFS = Independent Front suspension. Some guys replace the motor on the SFA and use the 2.7 or KZ motors amongst others. Can not remember the 5l now but there is a post on the site that will tell you.

Hi there,
5L is the 3 Liter Diesel engine that came out in the IFS bakkies from 1999 to 2001.
The 2L is the 2.4 Diesel, 3L the 2.8 diesel.

Re: 2.7i in a SFA Hilux
Well this opinion is my own and I would say very opinionated but here goes any why.
There is only 3 ways to have a 4x4, firstly it has to be a Hilux secondly the Hilux has to have a live axel and a 2.7 engine. This leave you with only 3 choices, no1 is the old live axel Hilux with a 2.7, 2nd the bubble nose Hilux with a live axel on blades and 3rd then the bubble nose Hilux with a live axel on coils.
First on my list is the bubble nose on coils, second the bubble nose on blades then the SFA with a 2.7. My reasons for this order is luxuries and drive comfort. I then also have to admit I drive a SFA with a 2.7 and this is last on my list, but I am not emotionally big enuf to part with my Hilux.
Places to go for these mods are 4xTech(a bit of self marketing) for the SFA 2.7 and bubble nose on coils. Burnco would be able to do the bubble on blades for you.

Re: 2.7i in a SFA Hilux
I am also a lover of a live axles........... but after my trip to Berakah, and comparing the SFA with the new Mcpherson IFS of the new Hilux.........I'm not so sure anymore..... :?
IMHO, a locker up front is cheaper, more reliable, and would offer more traction than a live axle.
Just some food for thought....

Wade
I hear what you say and agree that an IFS is not bad at all but if you need to compare a SFA to an IFS over the course of say 150 000 kms do you really think the IFS would last nearly as long, without having to spend and arm and a leg on maintenance, or be as reliable as the SFA if you use it off-road extensively?
I think that is where the SFA comes to its own right. Also you must remember that without proper bash plates a IFS is more susceptible to damage when used off-road.

Re: 2.7i in a SFA Hilux
Hi Bennie,
Like everything in life, I think we need to quantify the application.
On a challenge vehicle, or for extensive overlanding, maybe the SFA would be the better bet. But for average Joe, to do a conversion from IFS to SFA would be in my eyes crazy.
As for me, extended warrantees will cover to at least to 150 000km, and then probably a trade in......
I guess what I've learned over the past few years is that we tend to modify, modify, modify, modify, when we already had a fantastic, reliable & very capable vehicle in the first place. We do after all drive a Hilux.
I've learned in a very short time, that the new Hilux is as capable as my old SFA (both within the limits of standard vehicles) and guess what, it's my daily, comfortable ride too.
So many new members join these forums everyday, and without having context as to why we talk about mods everyday, often they become mis-informed. It's not that I don't agree with the logic above, it's just I wish to paint a picture from the other side.....

There are hundreds of high milage IFS Toyota's and Isuzu's out there that are testiment to IFS reliability, yes even those that have lifted suspension etc......benhur wrote: Wade

I agree that bash plate etc are essential, but then most fit these to SFA as well. Pure protection comes at the fraction of the price of a conversion.benhur wrote: I think that is where the SFA comes to its own right. Re: 2.7i in a SFA Hilux
Yes Bennie I do favour the 3RZ above the 7ME because the 3RZ has low end torque and the 7M not, I don’t have to butcher the car to make the engine work and lastly the 3RZ would last 4 times logger
iHilux you are correct for average Joe in the street the standard car is convertible and definitely capable of doing up to a 3,5 to a 4 rated trail with a push. For the people that really want to do the grade 5 trails, of witch there are still some left in the Cape, you need a SFA 4x4 with power.
