Engine Swap 7MGE to 4Y

Post by X19TURBO »

Hi Guys

I want to swap my 7MGE ( 3.0L Cressida) Conversion for the std 4Y (2.2)setup.

The engine runs with a MR Turbo fuel management system & getting between 8 to 8.5 KM/L.

Thanks :)

You're going to lose power(alot) with practically the same, if not higher, fuel consumption!

If you are having problems with the 7MGE let us know, there's alot of guys that can give advice... if it's the management system that's giving hassles, then there are good replacement options like a Dicktator or Microtech, that could resolve the issues...

I've never heard of anyone wanting to go back to a 4Y after having a 7MGE(unless it's a seriously botched conversion)!

There is nothing wrong with the setup.I am currently busy changing the Head gasket & its not very easy if youre doing it alone.I need something that is practical & easy to work with.

The Management is good, mabe I'm just fed up :x

Very wise decision Bertie, the 7M don't "fit and sit nicely" in an SFA nê

If you're gonna do the swap then why not put a Frod V6 in, a 4Y is gonna be frustratingly underpowered, unless it's a 4Y :o: with Efi.

A Frod V6 is gonna cost you less to drop in than a standard 4Y mos :Geek:

If your conversion is working good, rahter just get another 7M moutor from the Jap engine importers and throw it in, its going to be cheaper then a HG overall, and on 7M you can't skim the head without having to do something to the compression ratio else you will pick up issues again. If you want to fix your motor then you will have to get a thicker gasket to compensate for what you skimmed off the head else you will sit with pinging problems as our octane is not high enough. There is guys that can make you special gaskets out of copper to the thickness you require if you go that route.

But I agree going back to a 4y is not a worthwhile conversion accept if you still have all the origional bits and piece lying around, else its going to cost a lot

Go back to the 4y.. If you have problems with 7MGE, you'll have even more with a Ford V6 conversion. Go back to standard, double your vehicle's trade-in value as well...

Hi Guys

I've fitted the 7MGE engine again & I'm glad that nobody swapped me for the engine conversion

I replaced the headgasket with a Victor Reinz Gasket & changed the head bolts as it was damaged. The Bakkie is running smooth as I had to change the mapping on the Mr Turbo system.
There is No COLD start problems as I had previously & it feels like I have a new Hilux Bakkie. The cooling system is working much better as I fitted the Radiator Bottle from The Golf/Jetta & fixed up the rooting on the piping ( Temperature on the management is between 78 & 81 degrees) :P

I think the biggest problem that I had was patience & that the 7mge is a GOOD Engine.

Well done Bertie, theres nothing wrong with a 7MGE, it's simply a great motor... the issues that some 7MGE owners experience are based on poor conversions... engine fitment and/or management systems....

It's a lekker feeling to fix an engine yourself hey!

Did you torque the HG bolts to factory spec or did you over torque them? A good idea is to retorque them again in 2 - 3000 kms in any case.

I attached a article I saved on my PC long ago.

I used the Victor Reinz Gasket as the Torgue specs is attached in the packet.

As per documentation it should be Torqued in 3 stages.
Stage 1 - 30NM
Stage 2 - 60NM
Stage 3 - 80NM ( But I Torqued it 90NM,Just to make sure)

Good but it still a good idea to take it up to 98 NM after everything has settled in 2-3000kms time

Hi There

The fuel consumption that I get is between 7.5 & 7.8 km/L at 110km/h.I had the tuning done from a friend of mine (Robbie Wallace).

The Engine is still running good, done 7200 km without re-torquing the Head. :)

Cheers

Is that town driving? You are the only gut I know that gets that consumption with a Mr Turbo. I have had Gotech and Dictator and the best I got with mixed driving was 5.3km/l I have now fitted the orriginal computer with airflow meter so I will see what I get now. I installed a cometic metal gasket with new ARP head bolts and have done over 130 000km with it. I did my conversion almost 6 years back now. I hope you are still enjoying the 7mge.

I am driving from Pretoria to Brits every day. There is no problem with the Mr Turbo management system,I fitted this system on 3 of my current vehicles. My luck is maybe the tuner.

I'm still enjoying the 7MGE Engine the only part that must be fixed is the exhaust, as it sounds like a V8.
