ground up restoration of my dc hilux :D:

Post by jontheron »

I found my lux in the back of a friends yard down in Durban and got it for a bargain  .the problem was he used it to pull and launch his boat so she had tons of rust  :( , So I decided to completely restore her but the project is taking longer than I thought  will post some pics in a few minutes

Well done thus far.
I always wanted to tackle something like this, and hopefully one day with my fav rolla - the twincam.
At the end of all the heartache and expense, you know you have an old car that is as good as new.

As for the color, I would go for white. Is so much easier to maintain. My buddy went and sold his white hilux and bought him and mettalic apple green mazda. I asked him how he's going thru the bush with that color van, he said he won't. He jump into mine  So what's the use of buying it then? Or else you always have the option of the R10K 3M selotape jobbie to protect it

there was allot more rust than I originally thought :o: mostly hidden by body filler  iv basically changed the entire fire wall
front floor pans (looked like a sieve) front end out with the old car
the entire left rain gutter
half the right
the front of the roof by the window
those two sections below the rear window and some other small bits here and there so there was a lot of work but at least now im happy with the structure of the shell

Haven’t had much time so iv been busy with the interior plumbing and heater system. I found most of the seals or sponge to have disintegrated .Is this also a common problem?

when I put my fan on full blast, I get a gentle breeze, so i resort to opening the window :D:

Could it have something to do with the seals and sponge disintegrating ?

I don't believe that any rubber shop would sell anything for a Hilux. What they do sell are generic profile extrusions of window and door rubbers. This means you buy per metre and then have to make up your own shape and length etc.

To me this works fine for certain things but where the rubber might have to be replaced again, I dont really want to be glueing a rubber into place because it isn't the right shape and it's letting in the wind and rain. :(
Yes the stealers are expensive but it is the correct shape for the door or window.

AFAIK and just my opinion

How much modification was there to fit them?

Marius, there might be something restricting the flow of the coolant, like a kinked pipe or a blockage, so that even if the heater valve is open, the flow is not there. There couild be rust debris that's choking the heater radiator itself. Then there's airflow over the radiator that may be restricted. There could be leaves and that sort of stuff that's choking the air ducts or the radiator fins. Its a really sh!tty job, getting in there. I've heard of guys (including Bretton) that removed the dash to get access to that radiator and air ducts. :o:

Out of sight .... out of mind, hey Eric. And then if rust does develop, the first you know of it is water dripping into the cab at your feet when it rains. :problem:

What would be the best protection for underbody IV sprayed it with a urethane based bucki protection, almost identical to rhino lining (their competitor) just wondering if you get anything better?
