This is what it looked like when he bought it
What will my wife say
This is the same vehicle above but before Andries rebuilt it.
Various stages of the rebuild.
The dash been put back together, how many of you know what the dash looks like behind the cover?
The gearbox installed
The front axle after it had been overhauled.
Ok Andries we now need to hear from what you did, how long it took and what it cost

Soos julle kon sien was sy oorspronklik geel.

Hi Andries,
Myne het nou net so 3000km gedoen.
Simon, I was asking if Andries has the Chinese motor in his SFA, as it looks the same as mine with the yellow dipstick. He does, and I have just mentioned that I have replaced my original Chinese carb with a Weber for (hopefully) better fuel consumption, I used to get about 5.6km/l on the open road at speeds of about 100-110km/hr (true GPS speed).
Spoke to Eben yesterday, they have a Chinese motor that has already done 200,000Km without any problems.

What is the diffs between the real 4Y and the China model?
The Chinese 4Y you have in your vehicles now, will those be the same as what the GWM bakkies run on?

Hi Piet,
It looks like the identical engine is used in the GWM and also Shang(?) vehicles, except those are EFI as well. I am toying with finding out whether the GWM w/shop will be able to fit an EFI for my engine, but don't how capable their w/shop might be with such a conversion.

Same block but the GVM is the EFI variant of the 4Y.pietpetoors wrote:What is the diffs between the real 4Y and the China model?

I see in the states the also had 22RE (22R with EFI) and 22RTE (EFI with Turbo) engines in their 4Runners
Aparently GVM bought their complete engine plant from Toyota which they now use to make these engines. So if they do not use inferior alloys it should be as good as a "Geniune Toy Engine"

4Y engines
The carb on the Chinies engine looks crude, as if it was made in a furnace, not nicely as the oruginal 4Y engine carb as we know, but if it works leave it alone, My old man when he was alive always said,
" Simon never judge a book by its cover" it is what is inside that counts.
I wonder what the fuel injection would cost from this new bakkie.

Hi Andries,

Hello Family Dog!
The conversion of the weber carb looks quite nice. Please tell me the two pipes under the carb on the photo wich look like quickcuppelings is it for the hot box Please let me know when you have tested it on the open road what km/l it give you. My hilux D/C with the chinese engine gives me anything between 5.9 and 6.8, depending on how fast a drove? Will you also please give me Piet "carb" telephone number. Pretoria Auto Spares tel. no is:012 3233043.
Thanks for the info and photo's.

Hi Andre,
Yep, we never used the two pipes, never really gets that cold here and it is just something else which can leak.
I will get Piet's phone number tomorrow, have it at work.
My Hilux (DC) never gave me anything better than 5.6km/litre on the open road, which is why I have installed the Weber. Will definitely post the consumption when I've had a chance o test it.

Firstly: Thank you Family Dog for the telephone number of Piet. A new Weber kit costs R3900 at Pretoria Auto Spares, everything incl. Secondly: did you know the Hilux's with a tailgait like mine(lights next to tailgait) , was imported through Botswana in the early 80's and we call them "Botswanaspek".

Hi Andries,
It's amazing just how many of these imported Hiluxes there are running around the country! Mine is also the imported one with the vertical tail lights - looks much better than the ugly tail lights Toyota installed in the locally built ones :)
Do you perhaps know what the diff ratio is of the imported Hilux?

Hi Andries
The Toy looks great, :D Can I send you one to fix up because I don't have the patients to do this. In Cape Town you find a number of these oldies that need lots of attention. How long did the project take?

Hi Family Dog!

Hello Niel!
It took me about 5 months to build up the Toy.
What year model are yours? What must be done? What engine does it have and how urgently do you want it?

How or what do you charge to do a job like your red Hilux, or do you charge by an hour, but is it a "Farmers Hour" or day rate?

Hi "uncle" Simon!
We must call you uncle, because it seems to me eveybody on this website is 33 and you are almost 42.
I will charge a rate depending on the state of the vechicle? It is difficult to say how long I will work on a vechicle, because I must Farm to earn a living and look at the website to reply my mail.
Have a nice evening and sent my regards to Michelle( cannot call her aunt yet because she is still in her 30's)

Andries
At this point I own a 2004 DC, KZTE but before I bought it I was seriously looking for a semi good condition SFA but as previously mentioned the ones in Cape Town is either ism (in sy m###/dinges) or the sellers wanted R95000 or more for it and that was just not reasonable in my opinion. They vehicle then needed body work and the diffs were leaking.......
When my wife said she is looking for comforts in the vehicle I decided on a later model IFS Toyota. Must stress the fact TOYOTA. I am always looking for something new and interesting to do especially if I have not done it before. So the idea grew to buy an older SFA and start a little project to restore it to its former glory. I don’t have the technical expertise but am willing to get my hands dirty and learn. I see that there are a number of guys here this sound like they don’t mind sharing their knowledge and can assist from remote i.e. yourself...
So when I saw your bakkies pictures the flame started burning again.
I will not be in a position to start a project like yours in the next 2 years for a number of reasons .

Re: Photo's of Andries and his various Hilux vehicles
Hi Niel, I had the same problem with the prices of the SFAs. Just shows you how good value for money they are. In the end I bought a 2700i IFS for R78,000 which is less than some guys's SFA Luxes.
I do not see a picture of your Lux yet?
I would also not mind start building up a SFA, but I think that I am still a year from there.

At 78K it is a bargain. A colleague bought an IFS (also 2.7 DC, 4X4, 99 model) that needed a bit of attention for 102K and spent an additional amount to get it spotless. He might join us on the 4th. He also owns a SFA (2.2 with some conversion, DC, 1992 model I think, OME) in good condition. I tried swindling him out of it but he said he will rather keep it than selling it for less than 95K.
Bennie this is his wife’s “platkar†– pity because the OME have not even done 1000km and the conversion gives him the extra power that the 2.2 did not have
Did you spend additional or was the vehicle in good condition that you could add the additional extras that you wanted? What extras have you added to date?

Pictures to follow.
Would love to start re- building that SFA DC. I hear that their parts are relatively cheap. Saw on the forum that you can buy a motor from Midas amongst others for fairly cheap. Maybe reconsider the rebuilding issue.

Re: Photo's of Andries and his various Hilux vehicles
Hi Niel
It has 337,000 km on the clock. So you can see that it has been used a lot, but not mis-used. The cover plates under the gearbox do not even have scratches on (yet). So the body have some minor scratches but otherwise it is perfect. I got it with the NudgeM bull bar and spots, I added the 31" Coopers and as we speak I am busy building rock sliders for it. O, and after I had it for 4000Km (1st month) I heard the rear silencer was starting to go, so the last time I went to CPT is replaced it with a stainless one. I also had the windows darkened so that the old lady and children can stop moaning about the sun and stop stuffing towels in the window.

Niel,
Apparently the Chinese 4Y engine is built from the same engine plant that Toyota used. The plant was sold to China. Anyway, although I've heard a few (minor) negative reports about this engine, I have heard of far more success stories on it. I'm very happy with mine!

I am back with a bit of luck, but struggle to get in and stay in, they are upgrading our cellphone towers.

Then you must spray a primer, i use MS primer, then you spray it with 2K Black paint.( Lekker @#$%%%# werk, geniet dit).
Speak to you guys tonight if enerything goes well and i can get in.

Hi Simon!
Thanks for the pics. We will try to not flood your poor inbox next time, but it happens when you want pics.(Delete works you know!)
I was testing the OME suspension after installion earlier that week.
I have my own "testgrounds" on the farm.
I am very impressed and happy with it. You know someone with a hilux is always looking for a reason to "play"!

The blue Hilux is my brother-in-law's bakkie. It was my second build up bakkie. He bought it in Lesotho for R 11 000. It was a total wreck. It is a 1986 4Y. It will post some photo's of us test driving it. He also fitted OME suspension, with "Pitbull" tyres.
