Re: lockrite locker front or rear diff?
Many views on this, but I would opt for rear diff only, mainly due to the steering problem you are currently encountering.

Re: lockrite locker front or rear diff?
For off road use it's much better in front, but at speeds in exess of 90km/h it's better to drive in 4x2, you will get used to "fighting" the front traction after a while.
Keep it as it is.

I'll just stick to my conservative opinion that lockers are'nt really neccessary but would opt for the rear only if I were to do it.

Fitting the locker to the rear of the truck will increase abillity by 70% off road
fitting to the front will increase by 30% off road
fitting to the rear will be a pain in the behind 100% off the time on road

Re: lockrite locker front or rear diff?
Blom, you sure you have'nt got that the wrong way around?
Off road, front lockers are normally considered better (motor weight as well as leading wheels). On road, front lockers are often associated with stiffer steering hassles.
Correct me here if I am wrong.

Re: lockrite locker front or rear diff?
I'm still new to understanding this whole locker thing.
From what I read, could one not simply disengage the locker when anticipating high speeds, thus diff will act as standard open differential?
And only when the going get tough, the tough switch on their lockers?

Re: lockrite locker front or rear diff?
The lockrite locker that is discussed here is a locked diff, that does allow the diff to rotate the wheels when turning, but when travelling in a straight line it stays locked and thus cause the steering difficulty.dalkill wrote:I'm still new to understanding this whole locker thing.

Most lockers for front that are selectable ( ie lock when you switch it on to lock ) are either factory fitted, LCruisers, Gelendewagens ect or ARB Air lockers. They are expensive but worth the money...
Hope this helps to clarify the matter.

Re: lockrite locker front or rear diff?
Ok, that makes sense, but how often does that happen by comparison to the more level obstacles like soft sand or mud. Even on a small 'walletjie' or one that's not so steep, would'nt a front locker "pull" you up / out ?As jy teen n wal uitry verplaas die gewig agtertoe. Dan help voor jou baie min

And with auto lockers you can just as easily stuff up tracks when the surface is not bone dry and you need to turn sharp. Also sometimes these lockers may hamper you as they force the vehicle straight on if you need to turn.Family_Dog wrote:snipes wrote:If ya ain't got em... you'll hate em!

I have a locker in the Pajero and sometimes it is necessary to use due to IFS and IRS but on a SFA no way you need them if you can drive!!

Ditto.

Re: lockrite locker front or rear diff?
Can't speak about auto-lockers, but certainly not a problem with ARB!And with auto lockers you can just as easily stuff up tracks when the surface is not bone dry and you need to turn sharp. Also sometimes these lockers may hamper you as the force the vehicle straigh on if you need to tun.
You still do much less wheel spin when using lockers on a SFA than without, hence less wear & tear on everything - clutch, tyres & environment. That argument doesn't really hold at all, it depends entirely on where and how you drive at the time.on a SFA no way you need them if you can drive!!
Bennie, fit lockers, you know you really want to!

Re: lockrite locker front or rear diff?
I still want to fit a ARB Locker to my SFA, but I am still saving for that and the winch!!! Think it will make a lekker offroader and overlander then.... I think Bennie should fit a locker to his SFA just to kick herman's dustbin gat.........

Eric, ek dink jy is reg.

Riceburner wrote:Benhur wrote:And with auto lockers you can just as easily stuff up tracks when the surface is not bone dry and you need to turn sharp. Nou het ek die strondste praat van die dag gehoor!
Johan/Ezere/FD en ander
What I meant is that with a locker in the rear your vehicle sometimes becomes difficult to steer if the front wheels are not gripping good. The two wheels turning together at the rear have a tendency to push the nose in a straight line (that is why your vehicle has a diff in the 1st place) and then you struggle to get the nose to go where you need it too. I have been in situations like that with the Pajero more then once where I had to switch off the Diff lock and use brute force to spin out an obstacle. I do not like to spin the Pajero with the 33s on too much as replacing 8 CVs is not a joke, so to spare her I do use the difflock to prevent wheelspin but on the SFA it is a totally different story. Johan saw the one day at Groenkloof where I took the Pajero out the side of a deep mud hole (a 90 degree turn onto a large step) I could not get out with the locker as the vehicle could not turn sharp enough and the nose kept on sliding back into the hole, after switching off the DL and with some woema I got out as the vehicle could now be steered into the correct direction
I have a Lockrite lying in the cupboard for my SFA ( I bought it at a very good price that I could not pass) and the first time I snap a side shaft after fitting the 33's due to the power of the 7M I may consider fitting it, but it would be more to save the vehicle from the abuse of the big moutor then to improve its off road ability.
Darryl if you learn to drive the correct lines you would be able to get onto the pavings at South Gate mall without the use of 2 lockers and crawler gears

Dankie, sien jou op die trail. You must have a drivers briefing before so I can maybe learn from you on how to drive and operate a 4x.
