Sheila's Sparewheel and slide
Hi
I have added a spare wheel carrier and slide to her.
We used a Carolla rear wheal hub for the bracket. The bracket is welded to the chasis so it should be strong.

Each? So combined it can take 200kg? Should be okay.george wrote:They are rated for a 100kg.Will see if it holds.
You can get some more usable carrying capacity if you used 9mm ply in stead of 19mm...

Re: Sheila's Sparewheel and slide
Gou 'n vragie.

Re: Sheila's Sparewheel and slide
Haak die turnbuckles nader aan die kante van die handvatsels waar hulle aan die yskas vaskom. Dis stewiger daar. Ook, jy hoef nie die turnbuckles SO styf vas te draai nie.

yip, these are the pics I was referring too. I see a lot of chaps driving with the gas bottles on the vehicle every day and I wonder why. I agree not inside but rather on top or at the back

Re: Sheila's Sparewheel and slide
Niel, granted that that damage was caused by a leaking Acetylene bottle that was on the back seat, but I doubt that the damage caused by a leaking gas bottle would indeed be much different. Fortunately, no one was killed in the incident. I have lost a friend who had a normal Cadac gas bottle on the back seat of his Jetta that became a flying missile and struck him on his head when he had a blowout and the car struck a stationary car parked alongside the road. He succumbed in hospital, never regaining consciousness.

Re: Sheila's Sparewheel and slide
Eric now you realy scare me.What was the primary cause to activate a explotion like that?Always been a bit over cautious with gas but if wifey sees that, no more gas equipment closer than 5km for us.From what I can make out it seems that the explotion went off inside the cab. That tells me the vehicle was unattended and not while the occupants were driving it.BRRRRR..........!!!! Sorry for hijacking your post GEORGE. If we meet each other at Baby Torin I will show you my homemade fridge slide.

Re: Sheila's Sparewheel and slide
I also wondered about that one before. Must have been a freak accident Even an acetylene bottle should not really explode like that. I remember in metal work standard 6 we were taught that the inside of an acetylene bottle looks like a hony comb ... bla bla bla...to prevent it from exploding. :? :? :?

Re: Sheila's Sparewheel and slide
The vehicle was parked and they figure that there was an ever so slight leak of gas from the bottle. When the driver opened the door, they assume the spark, small as it was, from the door switch operating the dome light triggered the explosion.
The driver survived, but a lot of damage was caused.
LEAKING ACETYLENE CYLINDER DESTROYS CAR
A Tradesman leaving for work had an incredible escape when it’s thought his mobile phone helped spark a massive explosion from a leaking acetylene cylinder.
The Newcastle worker, was being hailed a miracle man after suffering only a perforated eardrum and minor burns despite his Toyota HiLux resembling the remains of a car bomb attack.
The Fitter left an E size Oxygen and Acetylene cylinder on the back seat of a Toyota dual cab over the weekend. The Acetylene cylinder must not have been fully closed and a small leak occurred.
On the Monday morning the fitter approached the van and opened the door, a large explosion took place.
It is believed that the ignition could have been caused by either the internal light, the automatic door control or by his mobile phone.
Fourteen windows in neighbouring building were shattered in the explosion and debris from the HiLux and two other cars which were parked nearby were scattered across a wide area. Houses more than 40 metres away were showered with plastic and glass and the HiLux’s roof was torn off and thrown 10 metres away.
The man spent the night in a local hospital for observation. His condition was described as stable.

It's a scary thought. We tend to take Gas bottles for granted, but a normal LPG Gas Cylinder would do much the same if it blew up in a car as well. I would say gas bottles should only be mounted externally, and even then only carried when needed.

Re: Sheila's Sparewheel and slide
So it was not the bottle exploding but rather a gas leak. So if the bottle is fitted uncovered outside like the norm, this should not happen then.
I have my large bottle outside the trailer and the small one normally goes into the drawer inside. Guess I will have to get a outside mounting for it too.

Re: Sheila's Sparewheel and slide
Howzit
I guess fitting the bottle outside is better. But I do not realy have space and do not like fitting things outside.Except the spare wheel  .I also think that if you carry it inside, make sure that the bottle is in good condition.Maybe test it with some soapy water to see if it leaks.
