Question About Nissan Hardbodys 2006 3.0 TD?

Post by lyndonl »

Hi guys

I guy I work with is considering getting a 2006 3,0 TD 4x4 D/C Hardbody, now I know most of you will either burst out in laughter or cry for they guy but its his call so Is there anything you guys know about the vehicle that could help me sway him towards a Hilux maybe?

One thing the Hardbody seems to have going for it is that they are cheap but that makes me worry a bit anyway.
he has seen a few 2006 models with between 50000 and 80000km on them going from between R140k and R180k now in my opinion for R180k I would get a hilux but at R160k I see the logic its a fair amound of 4x4 for that kind of money.

So in particular are the 3.0 TD's thirsty do they have turbo or injector issues are they under powered etc.

He is a good buddy of mine and if possible I would like to save him some pain if they do have known issues.

The 3.0 TD 16V engine is not bad, but it is also not really that great!!! They have a fair amount of turbo lag in the lower rpm range ( lots more than a KZ).

They have been known, some models to lose power and suddenly become like the 3.2D Nissans - Donkeys. Some of these problems were related to airflow meter problems ( remind me a lot of the Terrano's) and other were related to the injectors, turbo's and pumps.

These diesel engine's were a bit thisrty, but not above the average. I would rather look at buying a petrol engine instead of the Diesel, however the 2.4I 16V petrol engine's were very thirsty.

It is a Nissan.... Nissans make GOOD tow-trucks... You see them at every intersection, and they look particulary funky in pink with lots of chrome rollbar-pipes and steam-roller wide rims.

I thought the D in 3.2D was D for Donkey, someone did try to convince me it was for Diesel but I would have any of that.

The 2.4 from all accounts seems very heavy on fuel and I know the 3.3 V6 sounds pretty good but this guy travels about 120km a day so I think his petrol bill would be higher than is car payments

Nassin Hardbodies are a super vehicle if you do a few mods ie. Chevy/Ford V8 motor and gearbox, full OME replacement.

The Hard Body Petrol range are all very very thirsty, the Diesels are strong but expensive to maintain. :x

What he'll save on the initial purchase price he'll certainly spend on spares, Nassin Stealers are bigger theives than Toyota Accredited Stealers.

Be a good friend ---> Find him a Hilux

We had a Nissan 3.0 TD 4X2 D/C for a company vehicle. So everybody had a turn to drive it. It was driven HARD. (like all company vehicles are). Yes it has lag. And it had a problem with the Air flow meter once. I used to gun it all the way to Orkney and back to jozi, and never had a problem. When I left, it had 250K km on and still going strong. I was impressed for a turbo diesel, especially as I know how it was driven

AFAIK the 2.4 12V was the lazy - thirsty jobbie but the 2.4 16V was much more economical

looking at this page http://www.um.co.za/specifications/niss ... 2002).aspx
the 2.4 16V does 13.9l/100km on the highway thats a bit worse than my old Jeep it does however have 110kw thats not too bad I guess.
and the 3.0 TD has 105KW and does 12.7 on the Highway in my opinion neither are great on fuel.
according to the same site the 2.5TD Navara does 7l/100km on the highway and 10.8 for urban use and has 106kw I think the 6 speed gearbox has a lot to do with this.

unfortunately the site has no fuel specs on the Hilux's neither does the Toyota site or the Naamsa site.
