2004 Hilux 2.7i Aircon compressor failure

Post by Cbotha15 »

On a recent trip I noticed some weird noises when the aircon is switched on. I opened the bonnet and saw that the aircon compressor pulley is not turning as consistently as it should. It would turn, then start to bind up which was the cause of the noise. Either the compressor shaft is seizing or the clutch assembly is busy giving the up ghost. There is a definite burning smell when this happens. I'm taking it to my mechanic next week to strip it out and see what is going on. It looks like a complete reconned unit is the way to go.
I'll be replacing the belt and tensioner pully for good measure.

As a side note, a new unit from Toyota costs 21k for the compressor and 13k for the clutch assembly. I was never intending on buy it from them, I was just curious as to what the price would be.

I'll update this thread as I go a long. Maybe some people can add their experiences or learn from this in future.

Cheers

If anyone has any recommendations on companies that sell reconditioned units please post it in the comments. Thanks

Update:

Took the hilux to my mechanic at Atlas Undercar in Pretoria North. Total bill came to R7916 to recondition the same unit, regas and replace compressor oil, new belt and labour. The reconned unit comes with 6 month warranty so there is some piece of mind. All in all pretty happy to get it sorted, especially with the current heatwaves we are experiencing.
