This is my first post to any forum, except facebook.
I drive a Fortuner and this never happened before, but could be due to the amount of people in the vehicle. We were 7 adults and 2 children, with a loaded trailer.
After driving at 100kph for about 15-30min, we hear a noise, but not sure from where. It happens when driving over potholes (patches in the road) and when accelerating. It almost sounds like when your shocks are giving in, and the tyre guard touches the road.
We checked underneath, but no signs of any wear and tear due to overloaded vehicle or shocks that needs replacement. We checked the prop shaft and centre bearings, no obvious problems there. Tyres and tyre guards, nothing there.
This only happens when the vehicle is loaded with people, even with trailer and 5 adults you don’t hear the sound.
I do not know if the weight of the car plays a role in the position of the prop shaft and if that could play a role.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Your problem is indeed strange and the propshaft carrier bearing was something that also came to my mind. From your description, this is a load weight related issue and may well have something to do with the shaft angle. Your description of the sound also indicates that something could be fouling against the shaft, but if you have checked underneath and didn't find any marks in the shaft, then it's something else. I would check the carrier bearing out properly and I would also grease the slip joint as well as the universals (there should be grease nipples on all three universals as well as on the slip joint).
See if that makes a difference. Could be that the shaft needs an overhaul. Is there any vibration associated with the problem? Has the shaft been removed at any point? (Thinking that it may have been put back out of phase.)
