Geez, sorry to hear about this, Martin. Speak to JohanM, you might be able to salvage the gearbox from his old Prado from whoever has it now.

Re: Prado Gearbox
Ask he guys that import the V8 Lexus engines. Sometimes a guy takes the engine with out the autobox. These boxes are similar to the Prado 120. Ask if it will work with the 90.

Re: Prado Gearbox
hi guys
So i followed the resident experts advice (Louis) and contacted Lextrene
according to them all that is needed is different bell housing and the 5 speed A650 box fits to my Prado
no problem with t/case bolts to box
At R4500.00 for both ,lot cheaper than 26000.00 quote from gearbox place
will visit them on Friday to confirm

Just check your Vin plate on the firewall. The Prado 90 did not use the A650 box. It used the A343 Gearbox.
The A650 is a 5 speed gearbox and the ECU on your Prado is 4 speed so the ECU and gearbox is not going to like each other very much and also the gear ratio's do differ a lot. Rather just ask N14x4 for a price on the correct gearbox. I know they have 2/3 90 series Prado's there all automatic.
The A343 Gearbox ratio's are like follows:
1st 2nd 3rd O/D Reverse
2.804:1 1.530:1 1.000:1 0.753:1 2.393:1
The A650 Ratios:
1 2 3 4 5 Rev
3.357 2.180 1.424 1.000 0.753 3.431

Re: Prado Gearbox
hi Guys
After having spoken on the phone to Lextreme and thinking they may have misunderstood what i was asking,i went there to talk to them(not far from my work)
I would need an adapter plate for both engine and t/case to fit Lexus box,tks Johan for info.
So back to square one looking for a gearbox

Hi Martin,
Did you give Toyota & Colt Spares a try? They mainly salvage parts from accident damage vehicles. Maybe, just maybe they can help you with a decent mileage box.

Re: Prado Gearbox
Martin,
What is the gearbox code listed on your VIN Plate in the engine bay located on the firewall? That is the gearbox you will have to source. The A340 and A343 boxes were much the same but the A340 were more known for overheating when towing. It seems like your Prado has had a gearbox problem before and then they replaced it with this one.
But I am speaking under correction here. Prado 3.4V6 5vz-fe engines all had the A343 boxes fitted.

Re: Prado Gearbox
Also take note that the OD ratio is different on the two boxes with yours being slightly longer geared which will lead to more frequent down shifts.
Standard tyre size 265-/70R16 you should be on 122 approx at 2500 RPM and 140 on 3000 rpm.

Re: Prado Gearbox
Hi Martin
Your best option would be to speak to N1 4x4. The A343F gearbox was used in the 100 series VX cruiser as well as the VX TD 80 series and other models. The will have one there. I was at the yard about 3 weeks ago and there were 4 x Prado 90's stripped for spares and some had to be auto as I have seen one was petrol which by default was automatic.
