Strange noise on rear diff?
Saturday evening as I returned from a lovely Golf Day at Blair Atholl (Thus the reason for not attending De Wild), I heard a strange noise on my SFA. Whilst driving on the highway at normal 110-120 kp/h. Its sounded half like a rumbling sound coming from the rear, and when releasing the accelerator, the sound disappears. As I've had worn diff issues in the past, I am familiar with the sound that a diff makes when not drained after a river crossing. Last mentioned is more a grinding noise than a rumbling noise.
Yesterday morning I noticed oil on my garage floor. It came from the left rear drum, which indicates to me that the outer oil seal on the drive shaft obviously needs to be replaced.
I could be wrong, but maybe there is something else wrong that caused the outer oil seal to start leaking?

Are you 100% sure it's oil and not maybe brake fluid? Just thinking the slave cylinders could have started leaking and the rear brakes binding causing the sound.

Re: Strange noise on rear diff?

Re: Strange noise on rear diff?

Re: Strange noise on rear diff?

Het hom so dankie.

What a weekend....
Replaced the following:
1) Wheel Bearings + Oil Seals
2) Centre Bearing
3) U-Joints
4) Gear Box Oil seal
5) Diff, Transfer and Gear Box Oil.
Alles loop reg, altyd reg... Toyota. Fells like a new bakkie.

Lekker man... bly hy is nou weer spiekerish.

Cassie,
Net so.

Re: Strange noise on rear diff?
Hallo Julle klomp slim mense,
Two years later, and i'm back on this topic: There is a strange vibration/rumbling noise when engaging 5th gear. The rest of the transmission runs smooth, but as soon as I go into 5th gear, it sounds like a rumbling (not grinding) sound. Any ideas on what this might be?
If it is the Center Bearing, then it should be continuous throughout all gear selections, or am I wrong on this?

Re: Strange noise on rear diff?
Sounds very much like its gearbox related, Robbie. Not good news, I know, but take it past Mayfair Gearbox and ask their opinion.

Re: Strange noise on rear diff?
Thanks Andy,
I spoke to Louis Zanoli this morning, and he also mentioned a few things. The first thing I intend to do is to replace the Center bearing (Again), all universals and then balancing of the prop shaft. I very seldom tow in 5th gear, and don't think that the gear is worn. Yesterday I quickly inspected and felt everything for signs of heat and leaks. The only thing I could see was that there is a small amount of gearbox oil around the output shaft area which indicates the oil seal needs to be replaced. There also is a small amount of play on the first universal (front to back). Thus the reason for sommer replacing all three of them. Also thought of having the yoke inspected, and replaced if necessary.
Will keep you updated if mentioned steps solved the issue.

Re: Strange noise on rear diff?
Why I mentioned them Stef, is that I know they're nationwide and I've always had great service from the local branch. Perhaps the Gautengers can give a better referral where Robbie can have it checked out before replacing carrier bearing and universals again.
Robbie, just to mention, the X-fer box and gearbox are separate units with their own oil if the output is leaking it doesn't necessarily mean that the gearbox oil is being lost, unless the seal between the two is leaking as well.

Hi Robbie,
Nou net ene gery wat presies maak soos joune. In 5de ry teen 80-90km/h. Voet afhaal dan hoor mens die geluid as jy jou voet afhaal. Versnelling niks.
Centre bearing is reg.

Re: Strange noise on rear diff?
Some feedback:
Replaced two U-Joints, Center Bearing, Output Shaft Bearing, Output Shaft Oil Seal, Diff Oil, Transfer Case Oil, Gearbox Oil and balancing of Prop-shaft. All at a cost of R2500. (The only outsourcing was the balancing part)
And some good advise which I read somewhere: To torque the nut on the flange, put it in 4L. It really works when you don't have a SST.
Everything runs smooth again.
