Clutch replaced but......
I replaced my 22R 2.4 DC Hilux clutch today with a SACHS kit. But now when I pull away it shudders a bit. I did make sure the clutch plate is correct way around ( 22R manual says flat part to face flywheel ). Also the clutch pedal takes load lower than before the change. I did bleed the system but pedal still low. Is this why the clutch shudders when I pull away ? I did purchase the master and slave kits as well and plan to install them as well. Maybe a faulty cylinder is to blame ?

Did you have the flywheel skimmed? If not this may be the problem, a warn flywheel slightly warped flywheel will cause judder... Bretton

Re: Clutch replaced but......
I would check all mountings before changing anything else. A faulty cylinder would be leaking and make changing gears difficult as the pressure needed would not be there so I dont think it is that. If you are changing just the seals in the cylinders, remember to check the bore and hone them if necessary to give a clean surface for the new seals. A leaking clutch slave or master cylinder may also cause the peddle to stay on the floor when depressed.HiluxJunkie wrote: Also the clutch pedal takes load lower than before the change. A new clutch will always take lower than the old one and it is purely because you are used to the old one that it feels so strange.
Did you tighten the pressure plate bolts to the specified torque?

Re: Clutch replaced but......
The kit included the pressure plate, clutch plate and thrust bearing. I changed all but the bearing because the one in the kit was wrong. The old bearing is still fine - no grinding noise and runs smooth when turned by hand.
I did not torque the pressure plate, just tigtened it lekker vas. I did not split the gearbox and transfer. I put crossmember back under transfer, tightened it to chassis and tightened the 4 bolts on transfer to crossmember. So I believe all is lekker vas.
There is only a slight shudder when I release the clutch slowly in 1st gear and accelerate slowly. When driving and pulling away normally it feels fine.

Re: Clutch replaced but......
Hi, HiluxJunkie and all. :?
I did my clutch the other day but only diffs, is I re bonded the clutch plate the guys at roadrunner said the pressure plate was still fine. Mine shudders to and does not dis engage completely I was told that this is because the clutch was bonded too thick. I "rode" on the clutch for a few kilo's and it became better but still grinds when putting in reverse. The thrust bearing still runs with the engine when idling,it has this faint squeaking and when I slightly touch the clutch it goes away. So don't know what to do? I did all the stuff everyone mentioned to HiluxJunkie. Can anyone help him and me?
I will never bond my clutch again :!: :!: :!: Period

Re: Clutch replaced but......
Mr H, I fear the news from me is not so good. In your case I reckon the only way around fixing your problem is to drop the box again and fit a complete new kit.
Unfortunately the saying of "goed koop is duur koop" springs to mind and it is a lesson learnt over and over.
I have a serious problem with guys that say the pressure plate is fine, even when it has done the same amount of mileage that the clutch has done. Why would one wear and not the other, the fingers on the pressure plate lose there spring and that can't be checked just by looking at it. Just doesnt make sense. The same goes for the bearing.
Guys, IMHO, when replacing a clutch, do it right the first time, yes it may cost more but it is worth it. It is definately less than the cost of taking the box out again and buying another kit.

Re: Clutch replaced but......
According to me, a clutch plate, pressure plate and thrust bearing is one and the same. In other words, if any of them fail, the rest has to be replaced as well. Same as with an oil service. When you change the oil, you change the oil filter.
The oil seals I would also replace when I'm busy replacing the clutch but only with Toyota's genuine parts.

Re: Clutch replaced but......
I was thinking about my problem again. My gut feel is that the problem is with the flywheel. I think there must be a place on it that is not smooth and causing this problem. No my question ? Do I worry about it and remove all and have fly wheel skimmed or drive it like this to let it settle. If left like this will it cause problems in future. I am going extreme bundu bashing on the 23rd of May for the weekend. We will do some 600 km of which about 30 km will be offroad through bush, river, mud and swamp taking about 12 - 18 hours to drive.

Re: Clutch replaced but......
I believe it would be fine but you will not have the control on the clutch as usual. You wouldn't want to ride on the clutch much. In most off-road situations you either have the clutch fully depressed (when stationary) or fully engaged (when moving). m2cw
If you want to have the clutch pedal take higher/lower, it's got an adjusting screw mechanism on the inside of the vehicle. Remove the locking pin, adjust the length of the bold attached to the cylinder and replace the pin. As easy as that

Re: Clutch replaced but......
Reviving a old post, but. I just finished replacing my clutch on Fortuner. And exactly same thing is happening to me. New SACHS clutch kit, new centre bearin (spigot bearing), new rear crank shaft seal, got the flywheel skimmed as well. Should I drive it and hope it settles? clutch is nice and light, gear changing is smooth. ust the blerry very very light shudder, and only if you release the clutch pedal without giving gas.
Any thoughts would help.. really don't feel like taking that monster of a gearbox out again.. not now at least....

Re: Clutch replaced but......
Hi Philly
I experienced something similar when i replaced my clutch for the hilux, last year. i ordered a SACHS clutch at goldwagen, they told me they have stopped selling that brand as there are issues with it, so they gave me a LUK clutch kit. After it was installed, the clutch will shudder even on small inclines if i don't give gas, even worse under load but as soon as you pull away than everything is fine, another thin the release bearing kept whistling , mechanics even started saying the problem is with my gearbox...so i decided to order a full kit from Toyota (very costly), problem solved. I also replaced the tuner clutch at Toyota....after 30000km now, no problems . sorry this won't be helpful but i just thought i will share my story!

Re: Clutch replaced but......
Hi Alex
Thank for the feedback, that's the same issue I have. Did you skim you flywheel when you replaced the clutch he 1st time? I'm leaning towards the guys that skimmed the flywheel for not doing it properly. They didn't even clean all the shavings off before they gave it back to me. I could also be 100% wrong..(hoping I'm wrong)

The flywheel was skimmed yes, by specialist who does all these work for the dealer.
