Burnt out Prado
In December I did a trip from Mabuasehube to Nossob, via Matopi, and came across a burnt out new shape Prado..
Does anyone know what misfortune befell the driver of this vehicle?

Re: Burnt out Prado
A general problem is that people don't realize how hot the catalytic convert get while driving. They then park in some long dry grass which then ignite after a little while.

and this IS clearly dealt with in the owners manual ... which hardly ever gets read .....CasKru wrote:A general problem is that people don't realize how hot the catalytic convert get while driving. They then park in some long dry grass which then ignite after a little while.
also dont forget, you dont have to park in the long grass. extended driving over long grass and bits of the grass gets lodged under the vehicle. Andrew st Pierre White actually dealt with this in one of his first videos, where he advised travels to clean the underside of the vehicle of grass after a long drive.
that said - I DO feel sorry for the owner !!

Re: Burnt out Prado
As Chris stated when driving through the veld pieces of grass and twigs collect in all crevasses underneath the car. This includes the space around the exhaust. So you often have to stop and clear these out especially the ones around the exhaust.

Re: Burnt out Prado
Just the other day I spoke to guy that lost his Pajero due to his dual battery system. The fuse in front was something like 100amp and his fridge's cable started shaving through. The wires made a short but did not pop a fuse and a fire started. A while back it happened to a mechanic and he almost lost his Colt. So be careful of all the electrickety

Re: Burnt out Prado
similar story last year on the other forum where a guy lost his bakkie due to an electrical fire - wire to the fridge got damages in the sliding mechanism ... fuse did not pop and the vehicle burnt out.george wrote:Just the other day I spoke to guy that lost his Pajero due to his dual battery system. Re: Burnt out Prado
I use the 30A NL fuses; smallest I could get, but I do not foresee ever getting close to that...
Anyone seen smaller values somewhere? I'd like to get 20A to match the D250S's limit.

Re: Burnt out Prado
4x4Direct has down to 10A.
Midas has 5A
not sure if you get smaller, or where to get it ....
EDIT - here is the range of possible fuses: EDIT TWO -
would have to check, but I believe the NL fridge actually has a 15A fuse, thus that would then be the smallest fuse you could use for the wires to the fridge .... guess you could try a 10A ....

Re: Burnt out Prado
The table is for the blade fuses I think.
The smallest cable I have is 10mm that should handle well over 30 A; trailer has circuit breakers etc. My concern was more for the setup around the D250S, from the vehicle to the Ctek & from Ctek to batt. 5A will do for the Solar panel input

Re: Burnt out Prado
I would say go with proper brand fuses. If not for quick thinking from my side I also would have had a burnt out vehicle due to a 10A fuse that did not pop but rather roasted a 6mm wire.
I'm referring to blade fuses. Bought mine from a car shop in a small "fishing tackle" box with the small compartments with all the different rating fuses. After the above almost disaster I tested a few of them and at least 30% of them did not pop.... into the bin and went and bought Wurth fuses and replaced all mine.

Re: Burnt out Prado
Grass gather over time round the exhaust and/or CATs.
That's the first mod that I will do on a V6 cruiser, get rid of those CATs, other wise clean out he grass twice a day when driving off road.
