Hi Ismail,
As far as I'm aware, there is no way to really tell if they are blocked other than a reduction in power or increase in fuel consumption. Maybe the slim manne know the answer to your question.
Have them removed anyway.....you wont be sorry!
Cheers

My brothers fortuner had that famous "jerk or surge", he replaced the fuel pump as he does have a 2nd fuel tank fitted.

But the van he still has surge at the lower rpm of around 1000-2000rpm. on the higher revs it pulls strong still

Diesel engine vehicles tend to have a lot more issues with regards to the cat and/or DPF filter in some models due to our diesel quality and lots of short distance driving that leads to them clogging up and needing replacement, removal.

Petrol engine vehicles are much less prone to cat failures and blocking up. Have seen high mileage vehicles with no loss of power/ economy and still running standard cats and exhaust on over 300000km's. Removing them cannot do harm on the V6 hilux engine. Other models and makes might have issues with cats being taken out but that is a story for another day as some models have advanced quite a lot in this department. But this is only for european spec vehicles that tend to have this issues.

My V6 Fortuner is on 145 000km now and have been thinking about it. What all does it entail and do you need to have sensors etc fitted? What are we looking at cost wise?

Thanks

@ismail: What exactly is the "jurk or surge" you are referring to? I have lately experienced on 3.0 D4D where there is a bit of a lag/jerk when I pull away as if something is not engaging/fueling properly at that moment.

Richard, basically the van had a surge/jerk at higher revs when flooring it
basically as you push the pedal the revs climbs then theres a jerk suddenly no power then power,
then the jerk developed at the lower revs like when pulling away suddendly theres no power then it comes back to normal, was very evident at the lower revs on pull away and gear changes between 1000-2000rpm
toyota advised it was the fuel pump on its way out. anyways feul pump was replaced and still the jerk exist at the lower revs but not at the higher revs.
the fortuner is stock standard just with an an extra tank fitted.

Thanks ismail! Sounds very similar to what I am experiencing. Will let them check and report on it at next service.

I just had my Cats Taken out last week and replaced the Box with New ones.
So now the V6 grunts when I power up the Dunes.

Response Definitly better.

Also , NO issues with the Engine light ETC removing the Cats.

Jsut make Sure, You do not Bump the Sensors when U are busy .

Unbolled the parts closest and Dril l them Out."Front ones" REmove the back ones with a straight Pipe or so. No Sensors and no worry taking the Buble out of the exhaust there.

05 / 06 etc does not have issues with the ECU.

Was done at Pro-Fit exhaust in Milnerton. Always Good work there.

Was R3 700.

Previously Removed the Back cats already.
What was done :
--Drilled out cats between the Sensors. "closest to manifold" (they were very Dirty)
--Crapy Bend that goes down, was redone and is closer to Body
-- Back 100L petrol Drumm, (exhaust box) was removed and 2 smaller ones added.
Result

Beauty of a sound , better throtle response. no Problem with the ECU at all on my side.
For Petrol I will have to see still. Did the Dunes so obviously gulped down the 95 Octane.

What does it sound like with cats removed. The definition of "Beauty of sound" will differ from person to person- Some of us like a loud, throaty growl from a free-flow, others like absolute silence and then there are lots in between.

Lets do this: Lets say that a stock standard vehicles sound is 0% and a loud free-flow is 100%. Where does the V6 scale if ONLY the cats are removed (no other work done like bigger pipes, other silencers, extra resonators etc)?
