Re: St lucia mond oop
Ons was in Mei 2007 in St Lucia.

Re: St lucia mond oop
The mouth used to be open to the sea about 30 years ago but was closed up for some reason. Opening it up again will restore the natural balance to the eco-system as the lack of natural flow was causing problems.

was it permanently open ?zepplin wrote:The mouth used to be open to the sea about 30 years ago but was closed up for some reason. Opening it up again will restore the natural balance to the eco-system as the lack of natural flow was causing problems.
Often these are closed for most of the year and would then pen during the rainy season only ... at least this is how it used to be at places such as Sedgefield, and Kleinmond.
I know the community medled with the Sedgfield system a few years back .... in 2007/2008 there was a massive flood and severe damage because the people closed the mounth too much and the floods caused damage long before the mouth was then again manually opened ....

Re: St lucia mond oop
It used to be permanently open but due to sand being dumped there from some or other dredging operations it was closed off sometime in the late 70's.

Re: St lucia mond oop
I remember fishing Mapelane and St Lucia in the 80's and the mouth was open.
Caught some big Kob and Grunther that obviously came into the estuary with the tide. Remember also seeing a Zambezi shark entering through the mouth channel one afternoon.
I always thought the mouth was meant to be open in order to have a healthy ecosystem and have the estuary function effectively as a nursery for fish to grow before spreading out along the coast.
