Hilux Build
So for the last couple of years since 2008 I have been slowly building up my Hilux to become what I would want in a competent 4x4.. More replacing everything that broke than actually restoring it. Only parts of the original drive train left is the transfer case and the front diff.. Everything else was broken when I got it or broke during the following 5 years. To say I bought a lemon is a slight understatement. From the get go the vehicle enjoyed eating itself and behaving badly in general.
Originally we replaced the seized 4Y with a aftermarket Fong Kong as we did not know any better. Replaced the gearbox with a recon and had the prop-shafts rebuilt. After some hassles with the carb not working like it should I opted for a Weber, power and economy was improved but the motor never saw the potential of some of the other vehicles I got to know on trips. The 4Y was just never that spunky compared to other 4Y's even though it held it's own on low down torque. Even with EFI this did not change all that much. After several head gasket failures I finally had it rebuilt and it was great, after 7000km of hard work the motor just called it quit's and died in a cloud of oil smoke.. There, I had it with the 4Y, it was time to go.. I had defended this little pain in my existence for long enough. So Mark is swapping it with a Lexus as it is the cheapest decent power I could find.
Now the rest of the body is in some need of attention.. Not looking to do a concourse restore, just replacing warn hinges, lock set, replace glass, repair hail marks on the roof, small rust repairs, straighten out the tailgate, coat loadbin with thin rubber sheeting and all other manner of small marks and niggles.. and respray.
Looking to shorten the already over extended shackles to improve road manners and then soften the blade springs by removing some of the blades. Shocks with added length will give additional flex as my current shocks are flexed to their full extent only to stop the vehicle from flexing any further.
Then for one of the biggest parts, interior.. I want to make the cab passenger friendly and give it a good upgrade from the chocolate brown dash I have at the moment. What do I do, where do I go to get it colored, replaced or just reworked to something more friendly. I will be keeping the bench as I find it quite comfy, but everything else will be ripped out and replace. Dyna mat will cover the entire cab and with the body work some serious effort will be put into getting the doors to hang right and seal as they were supposed to.
Lets hear you ideas on what could be done to make a nice and decent truck an amazing adventure vehicle..

Re: Hilux Build
Originally Mark would have done a non VVTI build for me, less electronics and still decent power for the light weight truck. Then spits came out with the Mercury that would run the VVTI without hassle.. As the non VVTI motors are becoming more and more scarce with time their price went up and we found a VVTI for the same price as a non VVTI unit.. So we got that and it is being slotted into the truck matted to the 4spd Auto as I read to many stories about the little manual boxes not taking the punch the V8 can give. It is an incredible thing to go from 81kW to 190kW and just expect everything to last as they were.

How is the rest of the drive-train components going to look like? Do you have the SC or DC?

Re: Hilux Build
Running a SC and the rest of the components will stay the same. Not on mad 33 or 35's so the diffs (4,875) should hold up fine as the 31's turn with ease. Rear prop will be 30mm shorter but the angles will stay the same. The front prop will be 30mm longer and will have a (very slightly) better angle but I am keeping the double knuckle. If the diffs show signs of early wear I will start looking for LC80 axles and do a proper gearing to be able to run 33's.

Re: Hilux Build
Keeping with the 4spd as it can be locked for crawling. Manual won't hold out long.
Was quoted 8 weeks but the motor should be running Friday.
You are close enough for a test spin once it is ready. Will give you a shout.

Re: Hilux Build
Going well to a point.. As with all conversions some teething pains to sort out. I got the Hilux back on Thursday and drove it home. After a refuel stop early in the trip the EMU dropped the map and the truck ran a little uneven and would die on idle. I couriered the EMU back to Mark who has taken it up with Spits and we should have a resolution soon and then it is all cylinders firing once more.
Dad drove with to fetch the Hilux and even with the non proper tuning the Hilux made a good impression on the 147kW D4D dad was driving.
Power delivery is even and smooth, box shifts need to be evened out a little to reduce felt kick on shifts but is even enough for a truck. I will also be looking for a shifter to fit with the interior and give me added features like Trip Tronic shifting.. Would be great to be able to shift for dunes myself.
Now to test drive it for a good couple of km's and sort all the niggles, then off to Grootseun for some body work and then interior.. Looking to redo the dash and get away from the chocolate brown.
Also ordered a new set of LED lights for the dashboard back lights, should be here in the new year. http://www.enlightenoz.com/
Still need to get everything cleaned.. Did not give the guys time to finish as the road was long.

Looking good! Hope you get the niggles sorted.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.

Tans is daar twee shifters wat my aandag trek.

Re: Hilux Build
Andy, the water level in die radiator was below the motors pick up so it seems like it was drinking/leaking water.. And to top it off the bottel was not feeding back to the radiator.

Yislike Willie,
Ek kry skoons koue rillings waneer ek deur jou posts lees.
Dus my grootste vrees... dat ek so 'n lemon koop. En die suzie lyk my elke dag meer so... clutch, cold start problems, braking issues, gear change issues, sluggishness, shaking suspension over 80kph.... and i just have bakkie over a month.

Myne, not so much..
