What to do when you ran out of diesel ?
How many of you know the procedure of bleeding the fuel system of your D-4D when you ran out of fuel ?
Helped a gent today. He had NO idea of what to do to get it going again ..... and for good measure he RAN it DRY, hoping to make that last 1 km to the Engen.

Kom ons kyk of ek my D4D aan die gang sal kry.
Maak die tenk vol diesel, draai die sleutel na aan posisie, maak die engine kap oop, draai die kraan onder aan die diesel filter oop, begin om die klep bo-op die diesel filter te pomp. Hou aan totdat die diesel by die kraan onder aan die filter uitloop. Draai kraan toe, pomp nou totdat die pomp nie meer wil nie, word hard. Draai die aansitter (sleutel) nou sodat die engine draai, hou aan totdat die engine vat. Indien nie gaan pomp weer so 'n bietjie.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the D4d have a self bleed system, in the sense that you don't have to open the kraantjie on the bottom of the fuel filter to get rid of the air? If I remember correctly I read somewhere that you only need to pump the fuel filter at the top till it builds up pressure as it will get rid of the air in the system by itself?Whisky wrote:Kom ons kyk of ek my D4D aan die gang sal kry.

Reinart jy is reg jy hoef nie die kraan oop te maak nie, jy pomp totdat al die lug uit is en die diesel die filter vol maak. Ek maak die kraan oop sodat dit vinniger die lug uitkry, veral as die tenk leeg was, daar sal baie lug in wees.

Sover ek weet is daar ñ hoë-druk diesel pomp wat net deur die diesel gesmeer word, so as hy droog gedraai word maak jy skade...

Nog net een keer met my Hilux uit diesel gehardloop - DADELIK afgesit. Slegs een keer gepomp tot dit hard is.
Ek dink die man het gister daai Fortuner LEEG gery !

I some times forget to deactivate one of the antitheft devices on Rooies and run out of diesel but it's not usually an issue, just deactivate it, then crank the engine while pumping the accelerator until she starts.
It was rather embarrassing the other day though, I forgot my lights on and ran the battery flat. I got a jumpstart from a friend but forgot to deactivate the antitheft and ground to a halt 20m down the road. Had to get jumped again, for a few minutes until the engine caught...

Your diesel should have a little hand pump function for this very purpose.

If I remember soon enough then it only turns over once or twice before catching. I think it forms a vapour lock between the fuel solenoid and the diesel filter rather than draining the lines totally

When I ran out I IMMEDIATELY switched off.
The gent I helped tried his best to keep going for that last kilometer to the garage - his system had NO diesel left in the pipes !!! I mentioned it in a previous post, I had to pump that unit until hard THREE times before the engine finally started.
So clearly the trick is to shut it down as soon as possible ....

Dis baie sleg vir enige voertuig om te gaan staan, petrol of diesel. Maar erger vir n diesel.
As my tanks op kwart kom gooi ek in en klaar.
Julle moet leer hoe om die gauages te lees.
Die F staan nie vir niks, en die E staan nie vir Enough nie.
As my tanks op kwart kom gooi ek in en klaar.
