Oil pressure low, maybe the oil pump packed up or whatever drives the oil pump is broken.

Does not sound good, good luck. :wth:

Polos do make a tick tick noise for few seconds when you start it up when cold. This is normal.

But the oil light coming on. :eh:

If the timing belt has broken it will not start. This also drives the "relay Shaft" that drives the oil pump and turns the distributor.

Is it a 8V or 16V motor? (IOW Two cams)

i would for starters, check the oil pressure sensor that give the indication to low oil pressure. a oil pump wont just fail, unless the shaft is broken. i doubt it that sludge can be the problem because of the clearance between the pickup and sump. maybe the sump is dented to close the gap between pickup and sump. if the motor turns normally over without starting, the belt or chain chould be fine. hope this helps.

I do not know the Polo motors but I suspect it is basically the same as the old Golf motors. It's been about 8 years since I last overhauled a Golf motor but if my memory serves me correctly the oil pump sits below the distributor and they both run with gears from a shaft. Or the distributor have gears and the oil pump has a spline type of thing (female in distributor, male on oil pump) that just connects to the distributor.

There runs an intermediate shaft which service the oil pump and distributor and this shaft is turned by the timing belt.

I had a golf once where the splash cover on the oil pickup came loose and was then grind in pieces by the crankshaft.
All the plastic bits then verstopped the oil pick up and oil pressure was gone.
In that case the bearings were damaged and I had to redo the motor.

That might explain why the oil light came on but it does not explain why the motor died and won't start again unless it completely seized or the timing belt broke.

Check the cambelt. Sometimes just some teeth of the belt break off. So if you look at the belt it will look fine but actually the pulley is just spinning inside the belt.
Remove the belt cover and then turn the key and see if the belt is moving.

I looked ata small pice of the cambelt where i could pull the cover open a bit ,the belt looke fine as if it is still ok,but i could move it left and right a bit so it felt as if it was not right .
i will go check again tonight and try to move the cover completely to check the teeth

The flat sound you hear makes me think that there's no compression...almost like turning the key with the sparkplugs removed.
The fact that you can move the belt means the cam is not turning, either the cambelt is broken/stripped or the cambelt tensioner let go.

If it is just the tensioner you could reset the timing yourself, not too difficult. But if the belt needs to be replaced you'll need an engine hoist as the one engine mount needs to be removed, the belt runs around it.

Not sure on the Polo engines, but on the old fuel injected Golfs the inlet valves did not clear the pistons when in open position. Hopefully you did not bend any valves.

Best way to check is to get to do a compression test with the cambelt in tact of course.

PS I have a cambelts & tensioner I bought for my 2007 1.6 Comfortline Polo...you're welcome to it if it's the same for the 1.4. There is an A & B type tensioner, I'll have to check which one I have

Ok update, removed timing belt cover ,belt feels loose, and while turning at the bottom pulley i noticed 3to 4 teeth gone,
Based on what you guys said,i think the belt is to loose ,teeth broke and maybe it jumped now timing far out.thanks stef
for the offer, will get belt and tensioner tommorow ,fit on saturday ,and hope all is sorted

Maybe you're lucky and the timing is not far enough off to have bent valves

Just remember you need something to support the engine with the driver side mount removed.

Ok ,after doing the timing belt and pulley she still didn;t wantto start.
this led the guy who was helping me to think it can only be the valves that bent.
so i waited for him to come and remove the head so we can see whats up and what needs to be done ,
problem now every day he needs to come and remove it he doesn't pitch .
anyone know who can help me in Krugersdorp area with this, and not rip me off ?

The Bosch Service centres are reasonably priced, Paid R2600 to have my Polo's cambelt done which included the waterpump. Not sure if you have one in your area.

Don't just go and remove the head to see if the valves are bent.

Before you go to that expense, remove one plug and take it with you to the spare shop.
Tell them you want a cheap compression tester to fit that size plug.
I paid something like R120 for mine a couple of years ago.

Now go back to the car, remove all plugs then screw the compression tester in where the plug should go and swing the motor with the starter. See if you have compression.
Repeat test with all 4 cylinders and record the reading on each.

Doing compression test is also something you can do yourself and you do not have to reply one somebody else.

It might be that your timing is out by 180 degrees then it wont start either.

To check the timing there is an indentation at the back of the top timing gear.
That mark should be level to the top of the head at the back of the motor. Then you remove the distributor cap (presume same as golf motor and still have distributor cap)
On the distributor body is a fine line, on the rim of the body. The rotor should now be in line with that mark. If the rotor faces exactly the other way your timing is out by 180 degrees.

Yes, can be, new vehicles do not have distributors no more.
They have a pickup which sense the position of the crank and then fires the fire at the correct time, electronically.

In that case you cannot really set it manually.

Then you must just turn the crank so the timing mark on the cover and on the crank pulley lines up and then that mark at the back of the camshaft gear must be level with the top of the head at the back of the motor. That way you check that you have your valve timing correct.(if same as golf motors)

took it back this morning he says all markers is lined up ,he does not know and thinks it needs to be put on a computer to see timing or set it or see if something else is up .What do you guys think.
