Re: Mounting 2-Way Radios
ok gents, maybe i shoudnt have got involved in this, we merely use our radios for work reasons, we are on our own band and quite frankly i dont know the total ins and outs. its probably best to take FDs adviseDingo wrote:Hi Lane, without any issues / comprimise on reception / coverage distance / etc???
If I look at it one would loose about 1/2m in height compared to a C pillar mount and less than 1m on a roof mount.
Would that make a BIG difference on the reception?

Fortuner.

Re: Mounting 2-Way Radios

Hier is 'n foto of twee.

Re: Mounting 2-Way Radios
Daar is verskillende kostes hieraan, hang af presies waar jy wil jou radios gebruik.

Re: Mounting 2-Way Radios
I had a GME in the KZ and recently got hold of a Vertex VHF. I did not want to remove the GME just yet, and opted to make the best of it, until I decide to toss the GME or add another antenna for the VHF.
I made a bracket that is just wider than the one that came with the Vertex, and used the same holes on the sides, so that the standard Vertex thumbscrews can fit, so removal/refitting is easy.
Sprayed it matt black and mounted the GME on top.

Hy is baie styf. Re: Mounting 2-Way Radios
We are going to KNP in August and will be hiring a 4x4 from Britz for my Sister and family. We would obviously like to keep comms and will do so via 29MHz radios.
Question - if we put a 29MHz radio into the Britz hired 4x4 will the radio work correctly/properly / etc if powered via the cigarette lighter socket??? We will also be using a magnetic base type aerial.

I want to know, as seen on the previous pic from Frikkie, can one mount the aerial on the canopy? does it not need some earth point? and how much more power does one need if you cant use lighter outlet? what will happen if lighter outlet was gonna be used?

AFAIK the lighter plug has 0.5mm wire running to it. You will need at least 1.5mm wire AFAIK and yes, you will need a ground planeHilux 1 wrote:I want to know, as seen on the previous pic from Frikkie, can one mount the aerial on the canopy? does it not need some earth point? and how much more power does one need if you cant use lighter outlet? what will happen if lighter outlet was gonna be used?

Re: Mounting 2-Way Radios
Cigarette lighter to power a 29MHz radio is not ideal at all, but for one afternoon, live with it. If the lighter socket is dirty or gaga from a smoker, expect problems! A 29MHz radio only draws around 2 amps when transmitting while a 25W VHF would require from 5 - 7A, depending on the radio. So, never think of doing this with a VHF radio, it's not a good plan at all.
A mobile radio antenna should always be mounted on a metal surface, which is used to act as a 'mirror image' for the RF signals. Mounting it on a fibreglass canopy will restrict range negatively and possibly lead to damage of the radio.
(But don't worry - I have plenty in stock! )

Family_Dog wrote: A mobile radio antenna should always be mounted on a metal surface, which is used to act as a 'mirror image' for the RF signals. Enige ander opsies?

Re: Mounting 2-Way Radios

Wil net bietjie lewe in 'n ou topic sit.

Re: Mounting 2-Way Radios
Not if your commercial FM radio is a good make. Here is a pic of PraDog's radio, I have no problems...
Just do not mount the 2-way antenna right next to the FM antenna, give it some breathing space.

It took some time and planning, but the result is a home made bulkhead storage compartment and radio mounting.

Re: Mounting 2-Way Radios
On the Prado 90 that I have, I fitted a Motorola quarter-wave antenna on top of the roof. The antenna is very flexible and can bend up to 90° without any trouble, if you are worried about clearance issues.
Internally, the Kenwood VHF radio is fitted in the standard double-sized radio space in the centre console.
