Trade IFS Hilux 2.7 for Amarok TDi. Am I crazy??
Hi guys. I currently drive a 2003 Hilux IFS D/C 2.7 4x4. Love the bakkie to bits and I have always loved the 2.7 motors as they are bullet proof.
I am recently considering to sell my Lux and buy a Amarok TDi or Fortuner 3.0 for a family vehicle. In the price range Im looking at all the Amaroks are slightly over 100 000km. Should I be concerned? What will maintenance cost be on this vehicle?
I drive about 20 000km per year, of which about 15km gravel road to work everyday. Annual holiday to the coast.
Will I be making a mistake to sell the bulletproof Hilux and buy second hand diesel Amarok?

Re: Trade IFS Hilux 2.7 for Amarok TDi. Am I crazy??
I had a few Amaroks in my fleet in KZN and the issues I had was mostly sensors go faulty and then they (the stealers) do not have spares. Another main issue with two Amaroks was the clutch (dual system) repaired under warranty but did not have the vehicle for 14 days, now 14 days in any business is a very long time. Otherwise found them a bit low, not enough ground clearance. I had two 4 motions TDI's and the other was normal 2x4's. Fuel consumption is very good. I still like my Hilux though.

Stay with a trusted formula. Just my 2cw. They might look good but clearly you already have trust/reliability issues. At 100 000km, any Toyota is barely run in.

Keep the IFS, it'll still outlast a new 'rok', and with less issues.

No one here is going to tell you to trade your Lux for a Rok.
Everyone with Rokke will tell you to do it.
Your money, your decision.
Or you can stick with a Tuna...

What ever you do, if you are use to a Bakkie (read truck in the case of the Hilux, only cool-drink , milk and Amaroks come in 2L) and you use it to load items you will never be happy with a station wagon on steroids (read Tuna), I made this mistake 5 years ago and will never again buy anything but a bakkie (see above) again.
Unless you love towing trailers stay with your truck, or buy the 4.0l V6 and to hell with the petrol consumption, IT IS WORTH IT!!

Re: Trade IFS Hilux 2.7 for Amarok TDi. Am I crazy??
Lets look at this realistically... From the above I take it you use the vehicle as a commuter, and a holiday vehicle, and not as a serious offroader, right?kleinbul wrote:Hi guys. Purely based on that, I am going to say that the 2.7 IFS is overkill for your application. Either the Amarok or the Fortuner will be a better suited vehicle for the job, purely based on fuel consumption and ride quality.
Fuel consumption: Both are diesels and should return close to 10km/l. Amarok will be more effecient than Fortuner, but that is a choice you will have to make. Now you will get those that tell you that diesels have more maintenance costs, but that argument does not fly here because the new vehicle you want to buy will be a diesel regardless.
Ride quality: Both the Fortuner and Amarok have more modern suspensions than the 2.7 IFS. Also with the modern traction aids, they have better road holding on gravel roads.
Now, buying a second hand diesel is a dicey affair at best. Be careful and ensure that the vehicle you buy has a full service history, and preferably one private owner. Do not buy an Avis rental.
Personally I prefer a bakkie for touring, as it separates the cab from the loadbin, which means I am not listening to the coffeepot rattling against the egg lifter all day long. So if I was in your shoes, and those were my choices, I would go for the Amarok... But that's just me....

All I can add is watch out for those out of warranty costs. Know quite a few VW guys that had to replace the turbos just over the 100K mark.

Re: Trade IFS Hilux 2.7 for Amarok TDi. Am I crazy??
Just saw this on the western cape 4x4 and difflock Facebook page.
Hi all! I am new to this group but would like to share a recent experience I've had with Lindsay Saker Edenvale. I purchased a brand new Amarok Bi-TDi 132KW in February this year and had issues with the clutch on 2 occasions. The 1st time (April), the vehicle was towed in and repaired and the 2nd time (June), I managed to drive it back to the dealer. I lodged the issue with the NCC as the vehicle was less than 6 months old and insisted that it be replaced with a new 1 to the same spec. Also contacted VW SA and raised the issue with them. In terms of the issues, a report was on not created for the first instance and the 2nd report came back to say that perhaps when the vehicle was taken in the 1st time, it was not repaired correctly...which then resulted in the 2nd issue. After about a month, I was given a new vehicle. I did not have any issues since the end of July when I took delivery but last week the service light came on even though I have only done 3900km. I booked it in to McCarthy VW Constantia and on arrival after looking at the job card, realised this vehicle was purchased on the 30th of October 2013 and the odometer reading on the system was 24289!!! The assistance and service advisor checked the car and checked the odometer and confirmed that the details on the system are correct. I have therefore deduced that the odometer reading was reset to 0 before I took delivery of the vehicle! The service light has come on as the car is either due for it's "annual" service or "30 000km" service. I have now further logged another issue with VW SA and am awaiting feedback on this matter. I am extremely angry and disappointed with the service from this dealer and would advise anyone and everyone to proceed with caution when engaging with this dealer in future! If possible, rather avoid them at all costs

It is your money to spend as you wish. If you make the wrong choice you have only yourself to blame. Why are there so many more Toyotas on the road than any other brand... make your decision and live with it. I am still happy with my Toyota...
