Solar charging 12v 7Ah battery

Hi Guys

I see many of you are getting into the solar thing and would like to pick you brains.
I want to get a 10W or 15W smallish panel and use this in conjuction with a regulator to charge my 12V 7AH batteries.
I also have a AA battery charger which has a 12V input for charging in the vehicle, ideal would be to also use the same solar setup to charge penlight batteries via this battery charger.


Would the above be possible with a solar panel and regulator (say a 3A or 10A)?

Yes. No problem. However, you will find the 15W too light if the battery goes somewhat flat for whatever reason.

We prefer using a 30W and 5a charge controller. Keeps it nice and full at 14.2V

Thanks James, is this because the 30W supplies more amps and when the battery is very flat it needs the additional amps to kick start it?

Correct. A 15w PANEL works adequately if it is installed with a trickle charger. However, if no trickle charger, you will be pulling your hair out soon enough. You can always be safe on over spec of panel as the regulator will do its job. Most people go wrong here.

Sorry, but what are u using the battery for? 7ah is a normal gate motor batt?

Yes, normal gate motor. Used to run LED lights, led strips.
