the unthinkable has happened to my 4.0 V6

Post by JamesC »

...head gasket has sprung a leak it seems.

Tested at the radiator after I noticed the radiator filler bottle getting too full.

Vehicle's temp gauge never moved. New gasket is only R600 but I assume I should have the head checked and perhaps schimmed in any case. What about doing the ports, while the head is off?

Do you smell exhaust gas in the coolant? What does the oil look like?

If the head gasket has blown you will most definitely need to have the head skimmed.

If you are going to do the valves it makes no sense in just doing one bank. The you will need to pull the other cylinder head as well. I also don't know how much improvement you are going to gain by just doing the valves without doing other steps to improve the flow of gas such as the exhaust.
Have you replaced the thermostat?

2005 model. 350 000km on the clock.

Yes, you can smell the exhaust gas in the coolant now, initially not. As mentioned, the temp never moved nor was it ever without water in the radiator.

I've done a few 4.0 v6 headgaskets, quite a big job, it's easier to remove the engine and do it on the stand. It was not neccesary to skim, only use genuine parts.

Must say, after 350 000km that engine looks brand new inside. Pistons look great so does everything else.

Head gasket has no visible blow-out and heads look great. Will send it off to engineering shop to check and skim as well as check valves.

Only bad news was clutch also needs to be replaced (I was sort of expecting that)...so while everything is out I suppose that is the prudent thing to do.

After playing in some muddy water two weekend ago, my 4l V6 also started overheating due to blocked radiator (and eventually discovering a hole in the radiator whilst washing it - But that is another story). Reason for mentioning this, my Temp Gauge also did not rise anything significant, or for that matter did not show anything higher than normal?!?

Water in the radiator and overflow bottle boiled, but the Temp Gauge was a steady normal just below half, exactly where it always sits!

Is this normal and should the temp gauge not warn you earlier? Can the gauge be tested or anything?

The temp gauge will only go up once the radiator is empty or not circulating any water at all.

Anyway, motor is open and heads look great. In fact, visually, head gasket looks fine (must be a minute crack/leak).

Head will get skimmed in any case. And to add to my woes, clutch also need to be done (got a Luk set at R3500).

I suppose the R10k coming my way is not too bad for 350 000km. Should be good for another 350 000 then.

Just an update:

V6 back at home jeeehhaaa

Total bill R13551 and this included:
Head skimmed and completely recoditioned (including valves and valve stems)
New head gasket
New clutch and bearing
Complete service inluding spark plugs
New engine mounting (one was broken)

Goes like a train, always

So I think we are set for another 350 000km

Het 'n Sachs kit by Goldwagen gekoop vir my 3.0 D4D. Was 'n special vir R3100. Mag dalk nog aan wees.

Goeie middag. Ek gaan my kompressie die naweek nagaan.

Ek sal altwee doen, twee nuwe skoene loop baie beter as net 1 :laugh2:
