Chinese 4Y engine in a 2nd Generation Hilux Surf
I have already posted this in the Surf section but am also posting here with the hope that it is seen by more members.
I am looking for advice - I have just blown the 2LT diesel engine I replaced 10000km ago and am contemplating replacing it with the 4Y petrol engine. (decent condition 2LT diesel engines are impossible to get and reconditioning them is very expensive for a uneducated "mechanic" like me.
Can anyone out there give me advice on this swop and info re replacing the carb & distributor which I have been told is necessary.
I have access to limited engineering skills so making adaptor plates for other makes of carbs etc is not a problem if there are other makes of carb that can be used.
Does anyone know if I need a different bell housing or will the 4Y motor bolt straight onto the existing Surf bellhousing/gearbox.
Thanks for any advice

Re: Chinese 4Y engine in a 2nd Generation Hilux Surf
Hi John,
I was in a similar situation with my surf 2 years ago. I decided to go for the Lexus v8 and have not looked back since...
Why do you want to go the 4y route? Just curious
I can't comment on the bellhousing but I am almost sure it will NOT be the same bolt patern. You must also keep in mind that the surf is a heavy body and with that in mind the 4y might have to work even harder and be low on power. Even more than normal.
m2c worth.
Good luck.

Have you looked at swapping it with the 2.5L FORD motor. These motors are quite cheap and are quite bullet proof.
We replaced our work bakkies motor with one of these crate motors that cost us R21000 including a new turbo.

Hi Ali3n
Thanks for the response - After spending a whopping R30 000 on the replacement of the diesel 2LT motor, funds are really short and the 4Y motor is the easiest option as I can't do the swap myself (buggered shoulder) and can't find anyone here in PMb to do the Lexus - will have to live with the lack of power - the diesel was pretty useless anyway.
Cheers
P.S where do you source your other Surf spares as I am battling with bits & pieces and Toyota here just keep telling me 'import from Japan"

Hi John,
Which year model is your Surf? I was under the impression it is the old SFA one, that is why I recommended the 4y. If I am not mistaken, the old SFA ones came out with a 4y as well?
If it is the old SFA one, can't you use the same Bellhousing as the 4y Hilux?

Hi Ali3n
Mine is the 2nd generation (IFS) - somewhere between 89 & 94 as far as i can work out - was first registered in SA in 1999.
Can get a new Chinese 4Y motor with bellhousing, power steering pump & aircon compressor at a reasonable price which, if my measurements are correct, will drop into the engine compartment with room to spare. before i buy, I need to sort out the clutch and the airbox both of which I need to source.
I know the Lexus motors (with gearbox) are probably much the same price but the logostics of fitting it are really beyond me so will settle for the "slower" alternative.

What was in before the diesel?
What about the 3.4 L Prado engine? Think some of the Hilux's overseas came out with them.

Hi Jaco - another 2.4l Diesel - too expensive to recon so put in a "grey' import engine - that worked like a lead balloon - trying petrol this time around.

Hi Borntofish
Found a brand new one with aircon & power steering fitted for a customer who changed his mind - my score - hope all goes well

Re: Chinese 4Y engine in a 2nd Generation Hilux Surf
Hi John,
Alien has a good point there - and most will probably advise the 4Y with an EFI conversion for more grunt. My experience is such: replaced original 4Y with a Chinese import around 15 000 klms ago - haven't had any problems. I did put a Weber 38D carb on, and that gave it some extra grunt - although some folk say they have experienced the carb cutting out on steep inclines/declines. I use my machine for overlanding, and try not do stoopid crazy stuff when out in the sticks
I also kept my old alternator from the original engine - the Chinese one was a no go.

Re: Chinese 4Y engine in a 2nd Generation Hilux Surf
Sorry for the late reply but I have been out of it for the last few months so trying to catch up.
Just keep in mind that 90% of the parts on the GEN2 are the same as our local IFS (2.7 & KZ-TE). Biggest problem I had was the front diff. Not easy to get here in SA.
To fit the lexus into the GEN2 (LN130) is extremely easy. 3 Main thing need to be done, Engine mounts need to be fabricated to fir on original mounting points, 2 - minimum 50mm body lift to get space to work with and the 3rd is get a decent radiator for towing. My conversion cost just over R30k but I did most of the work myself. Just for interest sake.
Good luck with the 4y and please keep us posted on the fitment and results as I am curious as to how it is going to perform.
I use "www.toyodiy.com" and get the partnumbers for my gen2 then order the parts directly from Toyota - Just don't tel them its for the surf, just give them the part number. That is if I do not come right with Gemini parts.laze wrote:Hi Ali3n
