HILUX 3.0 D4D AUTO VS MANUAL

Post by Bester »

I want to buy an auto Hilux 3.0 D4D, but I'm getting second thoughts...

How does the auto compare vs the manual when towing, or when riding off-road?

Bester,

I have a V6 Auto Hilux and my wife has a D4D Auto Fortuner. Must be honest the V6 Auto is only a pleasure off-road and towing. The tuna is very pleasant on road, but do not know if it is set incorrectly as it is a new car but the D4D Tuna Auto is not happy in low range. Holds the gears for very long before changing! Not very pleasant!

My 2cw if you want diesel go manual! Otherwise go V6

I prefer the manuel, so that I can change when I want to change the gears. I have heard that the auto does not assist much with compression braking on steep descents... unless you change the gears manually in the auto box. I also understand that it is difficult to push start the auto when you have a flat battery (plaas battery) :alvarin: :cooldude: :laugh2: :lmao: :blackeye: :surrender:

Thanks for the response, I do mainly longer distance trips, not a lot of driving in traffic, and towing either offroad trailer or caravan about once a month. I've never owned an auto bakkie before, so cannot make up my mind of it is the right thing to do.

Fuel consumption in an auto will always be worse than in a manual. My friend Piet tows a big BushLapa trailer with his D4D Fortuner Auto and says he gets 7.5km/l and better at 110km/h...

Bester,

If you want to tow a heavy trailer or boat, go for the auto D4D.

If you tow with a V6 you can expect 5.5km/l max... :silent: , but I love the power.

Done a few trips through Botswana & Namibia with D4d Auto. What a pleasure > I cannot think of any other way than auto.
No problems in thick sand and only a please with the auto gear selection when on game drives etc.
With the chip I got 10.5 from Cape Town to Jeffreys in December doing 120.

Auto Auto Auto ! :surrender:

A perfect match with the torque of the diesel engine !
For the average 4x4 driver auto is so much easier.
