screeching belt
Help....
The old LS 400 beats me.......
why does my fan belt screech when i start? It dies after a little revving and keeps quiet until i re-start again
the belt is tensioned to what I think it should be, and i sprayed a little bit of "combat"on the belt while it idles, but to no avail
any ideas/recommendation out there?

How old is the belt and how sure are you that the tension is correct (factory spec)?

Re: screeching belt
Could be the type (make) of belt you are using.
I would change the belt and makes sure all the pulleys are running straight. :|

Re: screeching belt
I've always set belt tensions by feel . Too tight and you will run bearings on the Alt / water pump / steering pump / compressor etc. Too loose and te belt will screech. As a guide line, tension to the point that you still have 5mm 'give' across the longest open section of the belt if held between forefinger and thumb (not with brute force). Never had a problem in over 35yrs doing it that way.

Re: screeching belt
I eventually changed the belt for a new one.
Problem was, that my lexus has no power steering nor aircon, so the belt is a "measured to fit belt", and only runs thru/over the crank, tensioner, waterpump, and alternator.
Was a real mission to fit the new belt, and problem solved.
Tried silicon spray, belt dressing, sunlight soap, but nothing helped. The belt simply stretched so far that the tensioner was on the max.

Re: screeching belt
Glad you came right! Just as a matter of interest .... I've tried various products over the years, and of the aerosol spray types found Spanjaard Belt Dressing to be one of the better ones, but it doesn't beat good old beeswax if you can get it .... that belt runs so quiet you can hardly hear it! Generally a non petroleum based wax would be a better option than the aerosols IMO.

Re: screeching belt

Re: screeching belt
Do not use silicon spray on belts. You are reducing its lifespan.
Use a good belt dressing spray, like Wurth or Spanjaard. I use Wurth.
If it stretches so soon you might be running to high tension. Have you tried a ribbed belt like the Goodyear Gator?

Re: screeching belt
AFAIK regarding belt tension - when it is set correctly, you should be able to grab hold of the belt and give it a quarter turn only, then it is set correctly. If you can't turn in a quarter of the way, it is too tight! As easy as that.
