Cataract surgery...
Having this done first to my left eye on 12th Feb, and then to the right eye on the 19th, They say quick, swift, painless, so that is not my worry, but being able to adjust afterwards, especially during the days between the two ops might be a challenge, 'cos I'm as blind as a bat without specs. We shall see (literally!!).

Eish! Not good to hear, but I believe it's a common procedure these days without risk .... also as you say, painless. Good luck and we will be thinking of you and holding thumbs that all goes well!

Hi F_D
You'll be able to wear your spex until the 2nd eye is done - that's where the frustration starts.
Most often, depending on what the surgeon and you decided, you'll end up needing reading spex only - which means that you'll be able to drive and watch TV without spex!!

Re: Cataract surgery...
Thanks Guys, I'm sure all will be well. The only discomfort will be from walking around the week between with one patch or sun glass over the left eye and the normal lens over the right eye. Thereafter, we will see ( ) hopefully normally but you guys will have to excuse my typos for a week or three!

Re: Cataract surgery...
Counting the hours.... my biggest problem is to remember the eye drops every 4 hours.
It's good to hear the stories of success, one only has one pair of eyes and it's probably better to do it now rather than later. Although my Mom had cataracts removed from both her eyes when she was in her early 90s, success!

Re: Cataract surgery...
lying in the ward now, begging for a nice cuppa coffee. not working though, will have to wait until after 3pm. Surgery is at 2pm, not too shabby, they moved me forward an hour. It's going to be a l-o-n-g day and all I can think about is a nice cuppa coffee... ;)

Re: Cataract surgery...
Why can't you have coffee?
The op is normally done with local anesthetic and/or sedation - are you having a General Anesthetic?
My patients eat a normal breakfast and are all done by 2:00pm!

Re: Cataract surgery...
I wondered about this, it's being done under a general anaesthetic. Yet I have heard from other people who have it done under a local. Not sure if I could ever keep my eye still though, I squirm like anything just putting drops in. Will ask Tony about this.

Re: Cataract surgery...
Never too late to change your mind!
The eye is immobilised from the local and you couldn't move it even if you wanted to, so that shouldn't be a problem. Recovery from GA is also much longer.
My 2c: speak to the Surgeon between cases and change to local - then you walk out of theatre on your own steam instead of being wheeled into recovery. Besides, then you could have that cuppa java right now.

Re: Cataract surgery...
Got a message from Eric .......
Hi Andy,
No pain but *VERY* difficult to read or post on the forum (or anywhere else for that matter!
I will reply to the relevant post (if I can find it!! ;) ) but will probably not be on the forum for a rfew days now, it's just too difficult trying to read posts with two very "different" eyes - one just cannot focus and I have to close the eye that was operated on. This of course makes it water...!
Please extend my thanks to everybody on the forum under the cataract post, I went for a check-up today and the ophthalmologist is quite happy. The pupil of that eye is still dilated but they have now put drops in which should sort that out. Other than that, I guess I will be off-line until a few days after the second op which is Wednesday 19th - if the nurses at the big H will accept me as I kept telling them yesterday I would be a much nicer person if only they would bring me a nice cup of coffee. I was starving and thirsty, but they wouldn't budge. They did however bring me a delicious meal of chicken & veggies afterwards but I was too groggy from waking up after the GA to really appreciate it.
Interesting matter is there were only two of us in the ward prior to the op and as we got talking, I realised I was friends with this person's brother many years ago. sadly his boet committed suicide shortly after their marriage. Then the Anaesthetist (how the hell does one spell that??) came to introduce himself as such:
"Good morning - Goeie middag - MY GOODNESS!!" as he recognised me.
Turns out he was one of my little Sea Scouts (I was the Scoutmaster) many, many years ago. I reminded him he was a very good Sea Scout and I was very proud of him, therefore I expected Royal Treatment in return.
Small world :)
Anyway, had a check-up today and apparently 20-20 vision in the "new" eye but my idea of removing a lens from the glasses and seeing normally from both eyes does not work - images between the two eyes are VERY different. More on that later...
Regards,
-Eric
