4.0 V6 Hilux Autobox Problem 4th-5th Don't change - HELP!!!!
Hi All,
My friend's Hilux has developed a serious problem with it's auto box. :shifty: It would not change from 4th gear to 5th. Our local dealer's technicians are also stunned, as the diagnostic computer don't pick up any problems (no fault code). It shows all is fine , but when driving it doesn't change. It's a 2005 Hilux Vigo 4.0 V6 auto 4x4.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Regards
Hennie

Is this only starting to happen now that it is winter time? Does it stay like that or does it eventually come right when the vehicle has been driven for a while?

Hot / cold - remains the same. Diagnostics at dealers show no existing problem......

When I was still at school my mom and one of my friends mom's made turns to drop us of at school. In winter time my friends mom's car would do a similar thing where it would not change gears (Ford Sierra 2.0) but once you drove it for a while and all the components heated up, it was working fine.
As I understood their problem was due to incorrect spec ATF. m2cw

Re: 4.0 V6 Hilux Autobox Problem 4th-5th Don't change - HELP
Hennie, I also have a transmission problem on Forest, very unwilling to gear up from 5th to 4th, need to really floor the petrol to make it go up, and because of the accelaration then, goes to 3rd. Had it at Toy dealer twice already, still not completely fixed, will have to take it back again.
When I took it in first time, they couldn't find anything on the diagnostics, but some guy from Toy SA happened to be there, and he immediately told the mech's to check the ATF level in the gearbox. It's a complicated procedure where they have to bridge points on the diagnostic plug, change gears up and down few times, run the engine till it reaches a certain temp, lift the vehicle up and check the level manually by opening a plug on the gearbox.
Apparently if there's either too much or too little ATF in, it causes a problem with the hydraulics of changing gears... that how I, being quite severely technically and mechanically handicapped and disadvantages, understood it.

Re: 4.0 V6 Hilux Autobox Problem 4th-5th Don't change - HELP
Thanks Hennie - his problem is that it doesn't go to 5th at all - I spoke to him this morning and suggested that they check the contactors on the gear lever. If you flick the lever left, it keeps the box in 4th or rather prevents / limit it to kicks to 5th. If this switch/contactors fails to send the message to the transmission controller (hi china - road is open ek se - you can now gon into 5th if you want.....) then it will keep it in 4th. My friend uses this function a lot - especially if he is towing. This prevents the box from "rowing" between 4th and 5th, saving fuel. Maybe because of the plenty usage, the contactors are not "making" when he puts it in Drive and the TCU thinks it is still limited to 4th only.

Is nogal 'n probleem met vandag se mechanics, if the computer does not pick up anything they have no clue where to look for a problem.as the diagnostic computer don't pick up any problems

Hi
As per discussion, has anyone came to the actual fault of why the bakkie don't change to o/d 5th gear?
I do have the same problem now ( 2007 Hiux V6 auto ) & Mark at WMJ is also struggling & pulling hair out to get it to 'kick' over on overdrive/5th?
Big Please!
Any Advice?
Thanks

Re: 4.0 V6 Hilux Autobox Problem 4th-5th Don't change - HELP
Hi,
I just found this post. My Hilux 4.0L auto has the same problem. It just does not want to shift to 5th gear. Computer just gives error message but no code. Went to 3 mechanics / electricians already and they are all struggling.
Has anyone ever found the fault yet?
Kind regards
Michael

Still weird that nobody has a solution. Different forum same problem... no solution.
Does the gearbox have a separate control unit or is it's function also controlled by he ECU?

Hello All. Not sure if this is of any use.
Assuming your vehilce has the A750F transmission, running through the fail safe charts the shift from 4th to 5th will be prevented with the folloing failures:-
No 1 ATF temp sensor,
A failure of shift solonoid valve SR, SL1 or SL2.
A DTC should be generated when one of these fail, so the fact that codes cannot be found is odd.
I would start by changing the ATF sensor.

Thank you for the advice.
I have got it at a different mechanic now. He also has the diagnostic computer. Maybe he can put it on again and then see if there is a code.
Will let you know.
Kind regards

Re: 4.0 V6 Hilux Autobox Problem 4th-5th Don't change - HELP
Hi Guys
I thought I'll join the discussion as the original post in 2010 was about my Hilux. Just to let you know that my problem has not been resolved yet.
Just a quick overview of what was done to my Hilux over the years:
- Replaced complete gear shift unit, (P,N,D unit)
- Replaced water temp. sensor
- Removed all four catalytic converters and changed exhaust system with free-flow one
- Replaced all four O2 sensors on the exhaust
- Replaced main ECU computer
- Replaced fuel pump. (Had to)
- Had the gearbox at three different gearbox outlets, every time they changed solenoids and clutches. But this did not solve my problem.
- Even put a chip in to see if that will help. Noooo!
Hope this will help to eliminate a few scenarios for you guys cause I do not have many left.
Can the guys please let me know if the gear shift problem is the only one, or are there any other problems that came with that.
As in my case, my Hilux also short shift in first ,second and third gears. Only goes max 3500rpm before shifting.
Only fourth gear goes over 3500rpm or if I lock it manually in the other gears.

It is possible to make a snapshot with original diagnostic tool?
It is very important to decide the engine Ecu command the solenoids to shift 5th gear or not.
If the ecu not command the solenoids SL1 and SR you have problem with input signals. If the ecu command the Solenoids you may have problem with Ecu Or solenoids.

Thanks Kornis, this makes a lot of sense.
I will do a diagnostic test early in the new year on the ECU to see whether the ECU send out the commands to the solenoids or not. This way I can eliminate a lot of probabilities.
It would be nice to know if the problem is in the gearbox or if it is some sensor malfunction.

Before diagnosis i will send you the wiring diagram and terminals of ecu of your car.It is important to know two important things :Eicker wrote:Thanks Kornis, this makes a lot of sense.

The 5th gear is commanded only electronic by solenoids. If you make test drive with solenoid wire disconnected the transmission gear will change all gear except 5TH.
The tester never show you if the solenoid SL1 an SR is commanded or not, only show the SLU and SLT.You should measuring the signal of this solenoids. They have different signal, and the Sl1 only with oscilloscope could be measured.
To help you , make a registration with IT2 tester and send for me the snapshot, after this i try to give you some advice how to eliminate the defective parts.

Re: 4.0 V6 Hilux Autobox Problem 4th-5th Don't change - HELP
Hi Guys
The problem is still not solved yet. I must admit, I did not spend any time finding the problem this year so far. I guess I am a bid tired of people working on my Hilux and keeping it in a workshop for weeks or months at a time. I am just frustrated at the moment.
I am driving the Hilux as is at the moment, maybe I will try again later this year to get it fixed.
I will let you guys know if and when I get the problem fixed.

Hi All,
We had our vehicle at a mechanic today. He noticed that the speed signal from the gearbox only shows about half the true speed.
That could be the reason why it's not shifting up.
Now we have to find out why its only showing half the true Value if corrected will solve the problem.

I don't know if it is the same problem but I had a problem where my vehicle would not change from 3rd to 4th. (4speed auto) After process of eliminatio, replacing solenoids, valve body, checking wiring, checking ecu and so on if found that my box had 2 speed sensors. front one controlled the shifting 1st, 2nd and 3rd and the back one would control 3rd to 4th/overdrive. checked the resistance on the 2 speed sensors and the back one was dead. Replaced it and voila, perfect.

Hi Everybody,
my Hilux has got its 5th gear again.
The mechanics from Caspers Car Repair Centre in Omaruru found and fixed the problem together with Kornis.
It was the low gear switch in the gear box that was broken as far as I understand.
Thanks to you guys for the help and effort ,
Regards
Gummi
