Stuck Heater Valve

Post by Tristan »

From the Tips and Trick section
Family_BullDog wrote:Relating to Johan's post on Aircons not working efficiently, Bulldog's heater would not adjust, yet the cable and linkage felt fine, with a resistance to operation of the lever but the valve itself would not budge. I bought a new heater valve. But then I noticed how easy the new one adjusted by light finger pressure, yet the old one was jammed fast. As an experiment, I sprayed the sliding portion of the old heater valve with Q20 yesterday, and left it.

Today, the heater was working! The Q20 loosened whatever was holding it stuck and I've kept the new unit as a spare.

I stole this picture from Ron's hydrogen posts :) Ignore the red square

If you look at this photo right at the top you will see a blue sleeved cable. This is the cable connected to your dashboard controls for the heater. If you spray the Q20 on the shaft / device it is connected to in the engine bay, you will do what FD did. You will notice that this cable is connected to a little swivel arm which in turn is connected to the shaft in question (half hidden in the picture behind the clear plastic pipe) m2cw

Tristan,

I couldn't budge the plunger (for want of a better name), not even after tapping it lightly with a small hammer. I bought the replacement from the agents (expensive!!) and noticed how easy the shaft moved. Being lazy by nature, I removed the two 10mmm bolts fixing the unit against the firewall and examined the faulty valve, which actually didn't look bad except there was no movement in it, zilch! Sprayed it liberally with Q-20 and left it. The next day I found the cab getting uncomfortably warm and saw the lever was still in the "Hot" position. Swung it over to the left and was met with cool air. Did this a few times, I was so surprised (and pleased!) to see it working again! :D

Thanks for the tip, Eric. My heater valve thingy is not stuck, but very stiff and I will definitely try this trick, before my Lux goes for his makeover! :D

That is what I thought but is there water in the pipe all the time or is it pumped through only when you start the vehicle? What Im trying to say is should I expect a gush of water when I take the hoses off  :?:

Best is to try plug them with something suitable, or at least keep them as high as possible, then you won't lose much coolant.

Geesh all of you guys crack me up, Kaspaas, well done... I have had issues with the heater for a while(it's pretty cold in CT so the heater can malfunction on the hot side happily), but never check this, and so will do this evening... BTW Hoppy says you can use a Citi Golf heater valve(with some mods to the piping layout) if the valve is trully stuffed and the OEM one is top pricey...

I inspected my heater valve and it has a huge hole worn straight through :(
Will it be okay to just block up the pipe at the end were the valve is :?:

Something interesting that I noticed is that the unit in a older Honda civic looks exactly the same as the one in my 22r except in reverse  so it should work except I would have to remember to put the gauge on hot when I want cold and vise versa

----If you do not need the heater, block-off the pipes from the engine to the heater valve and it is the end of the problem.
