engine warning light - rough idle KZTE

My 2001 4x4 Hilux KZTE is giving some hassles.
It has done 440k.
It started to idle roughly and the engine seemed rough.
The engine warning light was coming on sporadically.
I took it in for a service and the workshops said the fuel pump needed to be reconditioned. Did that.
I changed the engine mountings at the same time, they were pretty shagged, the roughness disappeared. but the rough idle was still there.
Trouble is the warning light still comes on, despite the fact that I took it back and they re-checked the fuel pump and calibration. They said that the one connector wire to the fuel sensor was dodgy and fixed it.
Now the engine light comes on when the truck idles like at a robot, or when I am running slowly on compression ie the motor is not under load. A few seconds after I pull away, the light goes off again.
This is driving me nuts!
I feel that there is still some kind of hassle, because the truck goes very well one time, and then for no apparent reason, it seems to lack performance and sounds like a cross between a landrover and Isuzu diesel.
I had the injectors recon'd about 15000km ago.

Any help will be appreciated.

Best is connect it using jump wire and get the error code by checking the flashing of the engine light, just search this forum. Cassie help.

It took a while to get it talking to the phone and you need to be able to setup blue tooth on your phone.
Once it works it will show you error codes and you can clear it.It also show things like water temp,volts,revs

Double check the wires and connectors on the diesel timing censor on the bottom of the diesel pump as well as the nock censor just behind the starter. Had the same issues. Problem was the wiring harness was very brittle.....

Thanks, I aim to take it to the auto electrician to check on the wiring, so a good place to include.

John did you sort out the problem? I have the same problem for a year now and is driving me crazy! Also tried everything. First replaced all the filters, then cleaned the diesel tank and then came the injectors. Had the wiring check by someone, but no loose connections. Also did the diagnotics recently and showed timing control sensor, replaced it (cost me an arm and a leg) and today the engine light came on again.

hercu, what did a new timing control sensor cost you?

I had the same a few years ago . We recon the diesel pump and replaced the ECU ,problem sorted.

I've got one of those Bluetooth dongles, however it doesn't pick up the correct protocol on my 2003 KZTE, I got it working using Car Doctor Pro, but no fault codes are read, so either I have a faulty ECU or it cannot be read. Although the OBD2 adapter works on all models I've tested thus far!

Hi, ek het myne getoets, dit het kode 14 uitgeskop (Time control system). Ek het toe die timing control valve self vervang (ten duurste die part by toyota gekoop, R4050!), maar toe was dit nie die probleem nie. Om 'n lang storie kort te maak moes ek weer my diesel pomp overhaul omdat daar erger wear op die housing en piston was. Was nogals 'n skok gewees want ek het die pomp 3 jaar terug oorgedoen. Nou wonder ek of die eerste ouens my pomp reg gedoen het? Die bakkie trek nou soos 'n droom, maar wat my pla is dat die bakkie nogsteeds hard idle.
Ek sal seker nou die nuwe timing control valve moet probeer smous.

Dit is nou n jamerte, myne moan al vir n jaar al oor kode 13 crankshaft position censor, ek begin al DINK dit is die chip

Het jy al probeer om daai crank shaft position sensor uit te haal of net te toets? Dit is onmoontlik op daai plug af te haal met die spasie wat jy het.
