Apparently Jumbo was after oranges that he smelled. Foraging for food, encouraged by many tourists.Irishman wrote:Even Rich must feel sorry for this guy
Sadly, a bullet put an end to his foraging days. A magnificent beast, he was!

FD were did you get your info about this from
Errrrrrrr!!!!! :x :x  it makes me mad as hell when I here about animals having to be shot because of peoples stupidity.
Im not saying the people in the pics here were at fault but rather the ones that fed the elephant in the past.
I think very!! heavy fines should be enforced on those caught feeding wild animals
As is evident here its not only the animals which end up dead but also peoples lives are put in danger so it should be looked at as a serious offence

Re: Bad Hair Day for Nissan owner
I heard that the people involved are actually tourists from abroad and the vehicles hired from one of those 4x4 hire places. If that is the case the responsibility lies with the company hiring out these vehicles to people who know nothing about the bush. Citrus is a NO-NO in the bush and that Jumbo can smell it for miles.
Later....

Re: Bad Hair Day for Nissan owner
Addo Elephant Park here in the Eastern Cape has very strict rules about bringing citrus into the park. These elephants were once fed with oranges, probably when they were first introduced Im not sure :?
Addo the town and area is largely made up of citrus farms. I got to wonder if this is not maybe the reason for a couple of escapes that have happened from the park
And if you have ever seen the fencing around that place its Crazeeeee!!! to think anything could get through that :?

This isn't a great pic of the fence but you can get the general idea.
It is made of i beam steel posts (kinda like railway track, might be the same thing) and gum poles about half a meter apart and about 1inch thick cable
The poles are also sharpened at the top so the ellies dont try to climb over.

Electric fencing use to be enough to keep elephants at bay. Their trunks are extremely sensitive and the slightest electrical shock kept them at bay.
The buggers however got clever and now simply walks through the fence backwards!

Yep, the first ever wildlife park I visited was The Knysna Elephant Park; Harry and Sally, they were juveniles back thenScorpion wrote:Electric fencing use to be enough to keep elephants at bay. Their trunks are extremely sensitive and the slightest electrical shock kept them at bay.

Back in 95, they were just in a field and you parked on the otherside of a very piddly wire fence, there was no one there, not even a Ranger when we pulled in
Since then we've back every year, now it's a serious tourist attraction and Harry and Sally and Duma are Chuffin ENORMOUS - but still apparantly Juveniles
My main memory of the visit was being sprayed with elephant snot when they'd depleted our fruit supply, then hot-footing it the hell outa there when Harry decided that he'd start leaning on the fence
I've never ran so fast in all my days - not a beasty to take lightly hey

Electrics still work, just need to have your offsets right. What they do is use their tusks.....insulated!
