Do your homework before alterations are made

Post by Umpalumpa »

Hallo,

As a newbie to the 4x4 world and this forum, I would love to share my experience thus far.....
Excuse the lack of enthusiasm, but my initial "fire for 4x4" came to a sudden halt after dealing with "suppliers" or the "mechanical Guru's" per say.
As everyone else, I was watching the adds and purchased a snorkel on this forum. Very happy with the snorkel and the instillation looks good thus far. (Cant really say I have anything to compare it to)
Now, I also purchased a "Dik" pair of spots and was quite happy with the purchase as well.
So I thought to myself, that the installer of the snorkel could also do the spots instillation. Right? Wrong!!

He installed the spots, with a separate switch and all that stuff, but continually my battery ran flat every 2 days that I did not drive Umpalumpa.
I eventually (after my wife threatened to skop my gat as sy nog eenkeer moet help battery charge) took it to an expert in the field and they informed me that the initial spot setup was completely wrong and they managed to tap into the main wiring of the ignition? Not sure what all this means, but apparently this is a big NO NO. I have a bit of a decreased technical knowledge, so anyone at this stage can BS me and I will believe them. That is the type of guy I am.

What I am trying to say is this. If you are new to the 4x4 scene and you want to do work or have work done on your steed, then take the time to do it. Research your options. Use reputable installers that can give you a guarantee on workmanship and someone who is in the game of doing it.
My initial spots of R400 now cost me R2000 to have installed.

I cant really blame anyone but myself on this. Just thought I would share my experience thus far. Hoping the fire will return, but for now, taking it day by day.
Just a guy with a passion for 4x4.....

Sorry to hear of your woes, Jacques, but as the guys here will tell you, ... school fees. Not to worry, we all have to start our learning curve somewhere, for the things we don't know. Stick around here a bit longer and you'll be able to do most of your upgrades / maintenance yourself. ;-)

Hi Jacques

That is a great motto to have, to use reputable installers!!! :thumbup:

All the mods I have done on my vehicle have been done by a reputable installer. And up to date I have not had any bad experiences, plus I could always go back if there was anything I weren't happy with... :thumbup:

Sorry, next time use the search block just above the hilux 4x4 logo and you'll find topics like this;

http://www.hilux4x4.co.za/wire_spotlights/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Take the diagram to the installer or do it yourself

Just be carefull with the link that Hoppy gave, it works fine for the SFA and IFS(Till 2005 early) Hiluxes.

The Current Shape Hilux 2005-2013 will be Negative Switching Brights. The wiring Diagram will be different.
