All I can say is us guys with the Jeeps had to inflate our tyres.. otherwise it would have been too easy..

Re: Feedback - Atlantis Hilux4x4 Fun Day 2013
Thanks everyone for a most enjoyable day. I joined Herman and Eben and an FJ afterwards for round number two and we went all around the outside through tracks and almost impossible hills. We got out after 17h30 and got home 18H15. It was an excellent day in the dunes and my best one so far. Blouwillebees also enjoyed and survived the day.
I will start editing tomorrow my video material and start loading it on you tube.
Thanks to the organisers it was a very nice event and I am looking forward to the next one.

Re: Feedback - Atlantis Hilux4x4 Fun Day 2013
It was a cold winters morning in Cape Town when a group of 29 vehicles got together on the sand dunes at Atlantis. After an initial postponement 2 weeks ago we were hoping for good weather, and Cape Town did not disappoint. I know for a fact if we even attempted to do this on 1 June as originally planned we would all have been in hospital with triple pneumonia..

Late withdrawals or guys who came along but didn’t compete included

JP Fourie – Broken vehicle
Stubbsie – Inexplicable naar-ness
Wessel Fourie – Unknown reasons
There were 4 guys who were on the list but didn’t pitch up, but we didn’t miss them an awful lot now did we?
It started with 2 challenges being set up simultaneously, the Dune Charge, and the Reverse Challenge. The group was split in 2 and as soon as the formalities and admin was completed the guys got stuck into it.
Dune Charge:
There were 3 take-off points which could bring the driver 100/80/60/20 points in the bag if he managed to make it over the top. If not he pocketed 0 points.
The 100 points take-off point was impossible to make unless you have a fighter jet. 80 was do-able but still difficult, and the 60/20 were the easy points. If you take the risk of bagging max points you also take the risk of not making it and scoring 0. Every competitor had 2 runs, and points would be accumulated.
Right off the bat, the manne with the big engines picked the high scoring take-off points but soon realised that the dune is trickier than they thought and scored 0. The guys with the less powerful vehicles took the conservative approach with varying degrees of success.
On their second runs everybody adjusted tyre pressures and picked a more sensible take-off point and either clocked out or scored some points. Except for Mister Swartvark. He started out at the 80 pointer.. and made it in spectacular fashion. Then he came back on his 2nd run, parked at the 100 pointer and gave that Vark a lot of right foot. He was up and over, and in the process took top honours for the challenge.

Reverse Challenge
Competitors had to reverse their vehicles around a demarcated circle without touching the markers. This was a lot of fun with guys going at a snai’s pace and getting themselves hung up on barrier tape. Some threw caution to the wind and just went all out scoring more penalties than points. An honourable mention for Hennie in sy D4D who had a lot of fun destroying the entire track. Well done Hennie!!

Blind Man’s Bluff
We used the same demarcated track as for the Reverse Challenge. Competitors had to drive blindfolded while being guided by their co-driver around the track. Once again doing their best to avoid hitting the markers. There were 3 competitors determined to show Hennie who can destroy the obstacle. Unfortunately Hennie disappointed with this challenge by scoring only 20 penalty points. Thereby proving that his driving skills while blind folded is vastly superior to his reversing skills. Scary thought!!

Twisty Drinks Break
While the Blind Man’s Bluff game was on the marshals plotted another route with many twists and turns and a dune or 2 in the mix. This was going to be the big one for the day. After some deliberation we decided to change the game a little and do away with the water drinking and twisting. But we built the obstacle with a 90degree first bend which became impossible to negotiate after the first 3 cars when around it. UNLESS you used only minimal throttle and took it really easy. Many guys didn’t, and the first gate was being repaired repeatedly on each run.
There was a gate set sideways on a dune and as a joke I said that anybody who went “wall of death” style above the top marker of the gate would collect 20 bonus points. So the possibility was there to score 140/100. I should must learn to count my words. Next thing Herman Caveman in his Jeep Wrangler went for it both ways, picking up 40 bonus points! And then everybody wanted to do it. So we let them! Because we didn’t have a column on the score card for bonus points we simply deducted the bonus points from the penalties, therefore you will see some guys with (-) penalty points.
The track got really turfed up and some of the guys struggled getting around the first little bend, let alone around the top marker! Everybody had a lot of fun getting around the track with sand flying in all directions. Royco made for a few benoude oomblikke when he took the last turn a little wide, demonstrating to the crowd how to balance a Hilux on 2 wheels and not roll over. Same thing happened to a Christiaan Lindscoten in his Mazda Drifter.

After all the challenges were completed we had a prize giving. Johann Viljoen (Johann Tyre), owner of 1st Alignment in Stikland, also paid us a visit and donated some prizes for the lucky draw. He also gave the competitors a challenge, but more of that in a while.
Everybody walked away a winner as there were enough prizes to go around for everybody.
From the feedback I got so far it seems like most of the guys had a lot of fun. I want to thank everybody on behalf of the Hilux Club for your positive attitude and your exemplary behaviour. You guys did the Hilux Club proud!
What did we learn?
There were period when the competitors were standing around looking decidedly bored, while waiting for their turn to complete a challenge. Please bear with us, this is the first time we organised an event of this scale and in future we will organise it so that there is something for everybody to do in between challenges.
From an organiser’s perspective I would like to mention that it was a lot of work putting the whole event together, and without the team of guys who assisted I would never have been able to pull this off on my own.
There was Tertius (Hilux1) who organised so many prizes and goodie bags, he got stuck on the way to the venue.
JP Fourie and Riaan (Vaatjie) who went to buy permits,
Gysie who ran around getting stickers and indemnity forms printed,
Stubbsie, who came all the way from Langebaan, to bring us the Hilux Club banners and radios and the 4x4 Direct prizes.
Caskru helped us all the way from Gauteng by designing a nice Hilux Fun Day sticker for the guys.
An then a very special word of appreciation to Abri van der Merwe from Paarl, who joined the forum about 2 days before the event, rocked up on the day with his friend Rocco de Villiers (not the piano playing one) and did ALL the time keeping / scoring for us!
Without our sponsors generous donations it would also have been a boring day. I would like to thank the following sponsors for making the lucky draw such an interesting event.
4x4 Direct – Pietpetoors for the mystery prizes. Some very pleasant surprises in those little packets!
1st Alignment, Stikland for the wheel alignment and balancing prizes as well as some other lucky draw items
Team Offroad for the 4x4 Training courses
GOMAD 4x4 for printing the stickers and documentation
Toyota Tygervallei( Heidi Tolmay ) for the goodie bags and caps
Transform Electrical Wholesalers for some lucky draw items
Multifix for some lucky draw items
But most importantly, we can have as many sponsors and organisers as we can lay our hands on, but if you guys didnt come it would have been a pretty pointless exercise. Thanks for attending the event. Thanks for your excellent behaviour, thanks for your positive attitude and thanks for having fun with us.. Until we meet again on a trail near you.. keep it safe..

Re: Feedback - Atlantis Hilux4x4 Fun Day 2013
So next time as jy wil feature, ry 'n hilux. Moenie worry nie Thys, die Jeep feature.
Geniet die video, dis so 4 min lank en daar is heelwat aksie. Ek plaas die volgende video sodra ek dit kon edit. Neem heelwat tyd om dit te doen.
