3 Provinsies - 15-17 June 2013 (cancelled)
Okay guys so here it is. The next one!!!
This time rount we will be heading off to 3 Provinces for the long weekend. The main trail is rated at between 2 & 3 with a few 4's and 5's but all have "chicken runs" so all are welcome from neewbies to hardcore.
"Three Provinces 4×4 Adventures
The Three Provinces trails are on a farm called Waterval, which is three hours’ drive from Gauteng, near Volksrust.
Here, on the top of Langkrans (a sheer cliff 2 253 m above sea level), is where KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Free State officially meet in a masterpiece of nature, hence the name Three Provinces.
Located on the Natal Battlefields Route, Three Provinces 4×4 Adventures has three trails: the 34 km Three Provinces Trail, the 8 km Wildkamp Trail and the 5 km Bobbejaankrans Trail. The Three Provinces Trail is a scenic route that takes a full day to complete. It’s interspersed with challenging sections where drivers need to keep their wits about them.
One such section is Helshoogte, a grade 5 steep incline with loose boulders and a stream running down the track. It has humbled many a driver, so be careful … You will need experience, a good knowledge of your vehicle and a calm head to negotiate your way to the top. This section is worse in wet weather, when recovery gear is essential.
A worthwhile additional trip operated by Three Provinces, is the guided Roodedraai Battlefield Route. Varying between 70 km and 90 km, it takes a full day to complete. It needs to be booked in advance. The Roodedraai route takes you onto the adjoining farms, where the battles of Allemansnek, Karenplaats and Amajuba took place. A guide vehicle and historical expert are available.
The area is rich in history, and the Waterval farmhouse dates back to the 1800s. It’s been in the Geldenhuys family since 1952, and Ronel has a wealth of information and anecdotes about the region.
What you need to know
Accommodation:
The two-bedroom farmhouse sleeps 6 and offers catering. Alternatively, you can stay in one of two self-catering guesthouses that sleep 6 and 20 respectively, or in one of two mountain log cabins that sleep four each. The campsite at the foot of a cliff has hot water but no electricity.
What else?
The Roodedraai Museum is well worth a vist. There you will find relics of old country living, and there is a children’s pet farm nearby."
Accomodation costs: R100 per campsite per day for 2 people with additional R45p/p extra per camp site with a max of 6 people. If you are 4 people the cost will be: R100 + R90 = R190 per day
Trail costs: R180 for the main trail and either R80 or R90 rand for the smaller trails depending which we decide to do. My sugestion is to do the main trail the one day and one maby two of the smaller trails the next day but we can discuss that on the day.
Funds to be deposited into the clubs account and the club will make a bulk payment the week prior to the outing as requested by the owners. The booking has been made under "Francisco - Hilux4x4 club" should you wish to contact them to confirm details.
Please could I ask that you pay only for the nights you are planning to stay as well as only the R180 for the main trail. eg, 2ppl @ R100p/d x 2 days + R180 = R200+R180 = R380. I have arranged that we can pay for the smaller trails at the venue should we decide to.
I am waiting for more detail from them and once I receive it I will share with you.

Mountain Log/Rock cabins - description:
There are 2 NEW Rock Cabins – We are running a special price (same as the Log cabins) for the Rock cabins till the end of 2012. One cabin looks inside as follows: It accommodates 6 persons. It is an open plan: Kitchen, Launch and Bedroom. The bedroom has a double bed, 2 single beds and in the Launch is a sleeper couch. Only the bathroom is separated. Something special inside the Rock cabins is the fire place – it will keep you cozy and warm during the unpredictable High field cold weather. Thus in the 2 cabins, there can sleep a total of 12 persons. Costs for the Rock Cabins are R190 p. person. p. night for more than 2 persons per cabin. For only 2 persons and less it is R460 per cabin per night.
About 600-800m (walking distance) from the Rock Cabins are the 2 Log Cabins which looks exactly the same inside as the Rock Cabins – just a bit smaller, but there can also sleep a total of 12 persons. Costs for the Log Cabins are R160 p. person. p. night for more than 2 persons per cabin. For only 2 persons and less it is R400 per cabin per night.
Between the 4 cabins, 24 persons can sleep.
Take note that there is no 220 V power at any one of the cabins – only 12 V to power for the freezer and lights, but we can provide 220V power with a generator at only one group of cabins (the Log- or Rock Cabins – not both) during a weekend at the cost of R100 for 5 hours per day. There are gas stoves and a donkey for hot water. The cabins are fully equipped with linen, towels, cutlery and crockery.
We don't mind if you put up tents next to the cabins - camping costs will apply. There are lots of space for that. Keep in mind that the campers then will have to use the ablution inside the cabin.
Waterval Guest Unit - description:
It accommodates 7 persons. Open plan kitchen, dining room and sitting room. Two bedrooms with a Double bed in one room, 2 single beds in the other room and a double bed and single bed on top in the open room. There is 220 V power and is fully equipped with linen, towels, cutlery and crockery."

The plan is that we arrive on saturday during the morning, Settle down and then take a little drive around, Nothing major. Just to look around and so on. Sunday we want to do the battlefield route and possibly one of the smaller trails. Monday we will decide there.werewolf wrote:Ali3n, was is the agenda for the weekend as some of us will only be arriving on Saturday ?

So it was or is snowing there. Awesome... but it is cold. I am phoning them today to make the final arrangements.
Please could I ask that we finalise the last of the payments today so we can pay over to them. It is going to be fun, fun, fun...

Jaans, you guys are camping by the looks of it? Overlander, will you be camping?
Alien and myself are thinking of getting a cabin, as we might be coming with the jeep and space is very limited.

Re: 3 Provinsies - 15-17 June 2013 (cancelled)
We would have love to had gone, but we had to cancel cause of the flu, Sidonie is still sick in bed and you can't take a chance just now we even get more sick cause we are out in the cold weather.
So can't we a plan for a small gtg this long weekend and just go out and play on some trail, maybe Monday. Or maybe just gtg and have a braai some where and just chill.
