Pretoria - A high-speed chase by police and members of a vehicle tracking company on Tuesday led to the arrest of a man suspected of stealing a Toyota Land Cruiser in the city centre.

The vehicle was stolen in Visagie Street on Tuesday morning and recovered in the afternoon when police and Tracker chased the suspect, a 30-year-old man from Mamelodi, who was driving it.

Captain Pinky Tsinyane, provincial police spokeswoman, said the suspect tampered with the ignition and managed to start the car.

The whole drama began as police were following a Mercedes-Benz travelling at high speed that had allegedly been involved in the theft.

The suspect in the Land Cruiser intercepted the police vehicle and tried to force it off the road so that the Mercedes-Benz could get away. A shoot-out ensued and the suspect was wounded in the upper body. Soon after, the chase proceeded through the CBD and ended on the corner of the R101 and Roger Dyason Road near Thaba Tshwane.

The suspect turned into Roger Dyason Road (at the intersection where Eeufees Road becomes Roger Dyason road) from the R101 but drove into oncoming traffic, after which he left the road in an attempt to avoid a collision.

The out-of-control Land Cruiser hit a signage board, veered down a slope and through concrete palisade fencing.

As soon as the vehicle crashed through the fencing, the suspect jumped out and tried to run away. He threw his pistol into a piece of land belonging to Exxaro.

The Land Cruiser, travelling at a high speed without a driver, came to a standstill when it hit the fencing.

Part of the concrete fencing fell on the car which was later taken to the SAPS pound.

The suspect was arrested and is recovering at Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

His pistol was recovered and he will appear in court on theft charges as soon as he is discharged, said Tsinyane.

She could not confirm who owned the silver Land Cruiser.

Tsinyane warned criminals not to contravene the law.

“They must not take chances. The police are always on alert and will do all they can to apprehend criminals,” she said.

Cobus Kruger from Tracker said his team reacted when the vehicle was stolen and contacted the SAPS.

“After the Land Cruiser tried to take out the SAPS vehicle, a chase ensued and we followed it to the scene,” he said.

The Mercedes-Benz has not yet been traced.

Another member of Tracker, who followed in his black Volkswagen Polo, said the same Mercedes-Benz was caught on camera when another Land Cruiser was stolen in the east of the city near Menlyn last week.

The scene drew crowds of curious onlookers who parked on the centre island to see what was happening.

They pointed at the Land Cruiser and were amazed that it had managed to travel so far without a driver.
