High mileage Fortuner vs Prado

Post by Jonathan Swatts »

I am looking at a 2008 3.0 D4D Fortuner with 296 000km's on the clock with FSH from Toyota for R150 000. Is this a bad idea? What kind of repairs am I looking at in the near future with this engine?

The other vehicle I can get is a 2003 Prado 4.0 V6 with FSH up until 100 000km's and then no history after that - vehicle currently on 198000km's and going for R160 000.

Which one would you take?!

The Prado is less of a risk if you can afford the fuel.

The Fortuner's motor can be replaced at a cost of about R35k for a low miaege secondhand unit

Prado!!

The 1GR-FE will give you loads more kilos, if you can afford the fuel bill.

Prado - when a diesel breaks it breaks properly and will cost a lot of money.

When you buy second hand, rule of thumb - go for petrol. Mine is on 310 000 and has not missed a beat.

Prado - repairs / maintenance costs down the line on the diesel will far exceed the difference in fuel cost.
