Around the house
For quite some time now we've had some tree dassie's that have set up home in our back yard. At first I was concerned that the dogs would chase them off, but besides the unfriendly attitude from the hounds, these bold (and very agile) little guys have expanded to 2 families. Although normally shy, this guy stuck about for a few pics.
Peekaboo!
It appears we also have a pair of headless turtle doves .....
..... and sprews doing what sprews do best .... making a mess. (I did'nt go for that shot .... the bugger let rip as I took it! )
P.S. I seriously need to invest in an image stabilized zoom lens!

Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Re: Around the house
I posted some pics of an eagle owl in the garden some time back, but this oke looks a little smaller. Good news if it's true, meaning that there are more than just the one. Funny thing is that he stuck around the whole day ... each of these pics were taken at varied intervals between about 9 am and 4 pm. He had moved a little from a cactus into a small fan palm, and did'nt seem to be too concerned about my presence, even when I got as close as about 10 m away.

Re: Around the house
As a kid and growing up around these parts, one would only see little 'wolf-tail' gecko's and two different types of lizards. Then about 15 yrs ago there was a foreign species of gecko that encroached upon the area, those almost translucent nocturnal ones .... probably accidentally brought in as eggs through shipping channels. The other populations seemed to suffer and I hardly saw them for years until recently where I have been seeing them more often again while the invasive species seems to have dropped off a bit.
One good thing about the invader was that one hardly ever had a roach problem.
Now I see a relatively new player on the block. Does anyone know if they are indigenous or where they originate? Almost like a mini Iguana.

Those last pics are of a blue headed lizard. they are common all over SA. We have problems with them up here as they try to drink milk from the sheep when in lamb. The sheep get a nasty infection from this bite and if not seen too quickly there is damage to their udders in future lambing.
These photos below are the gecko's that we get up here, I have about 10 of them around the house( inside and outside) They make a bit of a mess but keep the insects at bay.

Thanks Roger. Interesting!
Niel, is that a juvenile or is it a Scops Owl. The Scops owls I know are much lighter in overall colouring but I have seen pics of darker ones before.
